Kasargod, Apr 22: Thieves broke into a house at Kadambar near Manjeshwar and decamped with 70 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 6,000 in cash on the night of Thursday, April 21.
The house belongs to Sanjeevi Shetty. All the occupants were out at the time of the theft.
Sanjeevi Shetty along with her daughters Meenakshi and Manjula, their children Shravya and Nikash locked the house at 7.30 pm on Thursday and went to nearby Chaukaru to attend Kola, a traditional annual worship of the village deity.
While they were away, the thieves broke open the windows of the kitchen and entered the house. The exact time of the theft is not known.
Meenakshi had come from Baroda in Gujarat to visit her hometown. She kept her ornaments hidden in a basket in the kitchen. The thieves stole the ornaments from the basket and also took away Rs 6,000 in cash kept in the cupboard.
The occupants of the house discovered the theft after they reached home on Friday April 22 morning. They first saw the window broken and on checking, realized that the gold ornaments had been stolen. They found the box in which the ornaments had been kept empted and thrown outside the house.
Manjeshwar police officer Pramod arrived at the place with canine squad and fingerprint experts.
It is suspected that people known to the family might have committed the crime.
