Less than required fuel forces Dubai-bound IndiGo plane to divert to Mumbai

New Delhi, May 6 (PTI): A Dubai-bound IndiGo plane from Hyderabad had to be diverted to Mumbai after the pilot found that there was "less-than-required" fuel in the aircraft.

The incident was reported last month, when the commander of IndiGo Hyderabad-Dubai flight (6E-026) sought permission to land from Mumbai air traffic control tower after it was found that there was one-tonne less fuel in the Airbus A-320 plane than the required quantity of 13 tonnes, a DGCA official said today.

Initial probe suggests complacency on the part of the airline's technician and his superior for the "less-than-required" jet fuel intake, he said.

"Their work will be reviewed before taking any action against them," the official said, adding that the pilot of the flight will also be called for investigation.

IndiGo said fuel onboard its Hyderabad-Dubai flight was as per the regulatory requirement, though not in accordance with the company's requirement.

"IndiGo flight 6E-026 on April 26 from Hyderabad to Dubai met the necessary DGCA requirement but was less than the company requirement. This was detected by the pilot after starting the cruise," an IndiGo statement said.

As the aircraft was flying over Mumbai, the pilot decided to divert the plane there for precautionary reasons, it said.

"The matter is being investigated by DGCA along with the flight safety department of IndiGo," the airline added.

This is a serious incident and DGCA needs to initiate a thorough investigation into the matter. An event like this led to an air crash in the U.S. in Aug 2011 when a Eurocopter AS350 experienced fuel exhaustion because the pilot departed without ensuring that the helicopter was adequately fueled .

Aircraft crews are required to diligently perform safety checks - at all stages of the flight including flight preparation, taxiing, take-off, landing, and when the aircraft is below 10,000 feet (sterile cockpit zone). Before starting the flight, the pilot performs the necessary pre-flight checks and records them into its checklist. DGCA should first probe if the pilot and the technical team performed the pre-flight checks or not. The incident seems to suggest that this wasn't done. If the results come out negative, then there is some problem with the management of the airline because they seem to be using unscrupulous means to cut expenses.

Fuel compliance is the prior condition the technical staff and the pilot should have ensured and confirmed before the take off the flight. This is the mere negligence of the people concerned who need to be examined.

I dont think it was found later that fuel was less.It is already known that in cheaper air lines,Pilot is under pressure to use less fuel and fast flight, less time in Airport .when not done as flight owner, pilot gets warning and Points.whether here too was the same I cant tell. Many cheaperone cant meet their requirements, and land somewhere when the fuel is few s are there.many had done and landed in other Airports. This was a insider report seen on Tv. sometime back.

Very Sensible decision by the Pilot.

As per the rules of FAA, they have to load the flight with enough Fuel to destination plus to nearby destination in case of emergency or not able to land at destination for whatever reason.

Airlines around the world have been found flaunting this rule so as to fly a bit light and burn less fuel to save some money burnt on fuel. Very dangerous practice at the cost of lives of hundreds.
DGCA should consider this issue very seriously and take action against the people at fault that would serve as a lesson in future by also publishing the action.

Check in youtube about a Air Canada incident in ACI series that had to land without any fuel at Winnipeg because of the misunderstanding with kg's & pound's of fuel required, the ground staff messed with. You would know how serious this situation is, if the Pilot had realized this in the mid of Arabian sea instead of Inland in India.
