New Delhi, May 12 (TOI): In a veiled warning to the Narendra Modi government, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Wednesday that it should not attempt a Uttarakhand-like "misadventure" in Delhi by trying to disqualify 21 parliamentary secretaries.
The decision on the fate of the 21 parliamentary secretaries lies with the President who will take a call on the matter only after the Election Commission submits its recommendations to him. Tuesday was the last day for filing replies by the 21 MLAs before ECI.
The poll panel had earlier served a notice to the MLAs to show cause as to why they must not be disqualified as members of the Delhi assembly and how their appointment as parliamentary secretaries should not be considered an "office of profit".
Kejriwal's latest salvo at the PM comes at a time when AAP is busy raking up the issue of Modi's educational qualifications. On Wednesday, he dragged the Centre into the issue of parliamentary secretaries, which could be the next big point of friction between the AAP dispensation and the BJP-led central government.
"Hope Modiji will learn a lesson from Uttarakhand and not do similar misadventure in Delhi by disqualifying our 21 MLAs," Kejriwal tweeted.
The Aam Aadmi Party government is sticking to its stand that the appointment of 21 parliamentary secretaries does not come under purview of "office of profit" as they have not been given any benefits by the government.
