Udupi, May 27: In the expert committee on prevention of sexual violence against women and children meeting led by Congress MLC, V S Ugrappa held with various officials at the zilla panchayat hall at Manipal on Thursday May 26, Ugrappa and his team took the members in the meeting to task. During this time, war of words between Ugrappa and superintendent of police (SP) Annamalai took an interesting turn at one point.
Ugrappa, who is known for his strong words, was no exception on Thursday. During an interaction with Annamalai he wanted to know why there was no committee in police station levels to contain crime against women and children while there is one committee in the district level. Annamalai answered that there is no directive in law to form committee in every police station level.
Annamalai also said that as the district level committee is work in a very good way, there was no need to form any other committee in any other level. Upon hearing this, two youths in the meeting clapped. Ugrappa was seen visibly angry at their behaviour. He asked why they had to clap. The youth replied that they were happy with the answer which was right and hence they clapped to show their happiness.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) at this point asked the police to take the two youth into custody. Police took the youth out from the auditorium accordingly. Annamalai apologized to Ugrappa soon after that. The meeting went on. Ugrappa’s outburst continued.
It is not known when the youth were let off.
