Udupi: 'Arab Udupi' Fame Shekhar Shetty Bags Rajyotsava Award

Udupi, Oct 30: Total of fifty one persons are to be conferred the state level Rajyotsava award for their contribution in various spheres including literature, theatre, music, fine arts and journalism on November 1, the Rajyotsava day. The award will be presented by Governor Rameshwar Thakur and carries a citation, a shawl and a gold medal, informed officials of the Kannada and culture department.
Shekhar Babu Shetty, a resident of Kalattur from the district has also been nominated for this prestigious honour. Shetty is the son of Aellurguttu Babu Shetty and Kalattur Badabettu Hosamane Paddakka Shetty. Shekar Shetty did his high school from Shirva Hindu High school. He completed his diploma in engineering, before he could go to Dubai for furthering his career. He also worked for sometime in the Bombay Chamber of Commerce.
Shekar Shetty is a pioneer in the hotel and catering sphere in the gulf region. He has been successfully running hotels in the Middle East Gulf region for several decades. In-fact, he started hotels in Dubai and Abudabhi from Karnataka. Shekar Shetty’s first hotel was inaugurated by the wife of present vice president Ansari, and since then his business has been flourishing and thriving. He has expanded his network of hotels to Sharjah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other places in the gulf under the name of Udupi Arab Group Restaurant.
While in Abu Dhabi, his hotel provides catering service to the Indian school children. There are nearly 350 staff members working for his hotels. In-fact what is commendable is that he has been employing those with low educational qualifications, thereby providing livelihood to scores of illiterate unemployed youth.
The Rajyotsava Award is a feather in Shekar Shetty’s cap as well as a remarkable feat, as he has bagged an award purely on his own merit, in-fact an honour which is usually conferred on Kannadigas of Horanadu.

Bangalore, Oct 30: The Karnataka government on Monday announced the names of 51 recipients of Karnataka Rajyotsava awards for 2007.
Some of the recipients: Sumitra Gandhi Kulkarni, Dr K Balaveer Reddy, Dr C N Ramachandran, Prof Chi Srinivasa Raju, Nagesh Hegde, Master Vittal Shetty, Parvatamma Rajkumar, Suresh Urs and Anant Nag
Kannada and Culture department secretary I M Vittalamurthy released the list to the media here a media conference. The 51 had been shortlisted out of a total of 552 applications / recommendations received, he informed.
Prominent names among the recipients are academic-thinker Dr C N Ramachandran (former professor of Mangalore University), actor Anant Nag, film-maker Parvatamma Rajkumar (wife of the late actor Dr Rajkumar), journalist T J S George, environmentalist Nagesh Hegde, neurosurgeon Dr K V Devadiga, Gulf restauranteur Shekhar Babu Shetty, G Shankar Family Trust of Udupi, former vice chancellor Dr K Balaveer Reddy and classical dance exponent 'Master' Vittal (Shetty).
Vittalamurthy further said that this list was made up of the best possible choice and beyond any controversy.
