Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (MB)

Mangalore, Nov 6: Harshananda Jathanna (45), son of Daniel and Mabel Jathanna of Udupi Mission Compound and a popular, livewire organizer of youth movements for popular causes, passed away in a freak, tragic mishap at Siliguri, Darjeeling on November 3.

Besides having served as general secretary of Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Mangalore and Udupi, he had also been secretary of Mangalore Christian Association and south-east Asia coordinator of Bible Training for Pastors Organization.

He ran an organization called Indian Leadership Ministry in Bangalore. At the time of his death, he was engaged in setting up a care centre for HIV-affected children in Bangalore.

'Harsha', as he was commonly known, is survived by wife Gunavati, son Rushil Koresh and daughter Rachel Priya. His final rites are being held in Bangalore on Tuesday morning.

UpdateInformed sources said Harsha was preaching to a gathering in Siliguri. A rock was being blasted nearby. A piece of rock flew off and landed right on his person, killing him instantly, they said.

Bad things keep happening to good people. I have been a part of YMCA since my kindergarten days literally and have seen (uncle) Harsha as the face of YMCA as I grew up. Have worked closely with him on a few projects and it's sad to see him go away at a young age. But the belief remains that 'Those whom the Gods love go young'. May his soul rest in peace.

It's such a rude shock to hear about Harsha who was the secretary at YMCA Mangalore while I was the President. Through his efforts YMCA had introduced many new projects for the welfare of youth of our society and one such was Helpline which has served thousands of our society. Apart from this he was a great organiser of youth movement and had a deep concern for our youngsters. I have no words at this moment but only to pray God to grant eternal rest to Harsha and strength to his wife and children to bear the loss and to be more closer to God always.

I have had the pleasure of being associated with Harsha when he was the secretary of Mangalore YMCA and it came as a shock to all of us here that he has passed away. He will always be remembered by us as a dynamic and energetic leader who was constantly looking for ways to make life a little bit easier for the less fortunate.
