Dubai: Bridge Collapses in Dubai Marina - Seven Killed

BBC News

Nov 8: A bridge under construction has collapsed in Dubai, killing seven workers and injuring 15, police said.
The bridge was being built in Dubai Marina, a new development in the United Arab Emirates city which is a regional business and tourism hub.

A large number of ambulances were driving to the scene of the accident. Dubai's economy has boomed in recent years, fuelled largely by a construction industry reliant on low-paid workers, many from South Asia.

More than 40 labourers were working on the bridge at the time of the collapse, police said.

Fifteen injured workers were admitted to Dubai's Rashid hospital, reports said. Five who had serious injuries were airlifted to the hospital.

"We tried to put a huge piece of metal in a wall when it collapsed," said Muthu Raj, one of the workers interviewed by the media

"I saw colleagues trapped inside, but I managed to jump back and stepped on the road."

The bridge was being built over a small canal in the man-made marina complex, which is close to the showpiece Palm Jumeirah resort, a massive artificial palm-shaped island.

Dubai is one of the fastest growing cities in the world, but safety on construction sites has been the subject of much debate in the media.

Foreign workers in Dubai recently went on strike demanding higher pay and improved housing for working on prestige projects such as Burj Dubai - set to be the world's tallest building.

Such a irony of fate. These men were building a dream place , when their own dreams crashed down along with the bridge. As one statement that it would have been different in Toronto, I wouldnt agree. Workers from India are at the receiving end in all countries due to poor organisation and personal interests. None of the organisations really benefit us, since the leaders see this as an revenue source when any person approaches them.Nothing more can be said about the External affairs ministry staff. Once you approach them they have a demeanouring look and see it as a trouble to them.

RTA announced 10 years salary because they know all workers are indian and works less than 80,000 AED. This salary is equivalent to Europian/American managers one months salary. It would have been a costly affair for RTA if there were any europians/amercian on site.

Seven innocent lives are lost due to negligence. The Chairman of RTA ( Roads and Transport Authority) was quick to announce a handsome compensation of 10 years salary to each of the victims. A UAE construction laborer on an average earns Dhs 20 per day. This will fetch their families only about Dhs 80,000 as compensation. If it were a traffic related accident, even if the victim was in the wrong, an unquestionable Dhs 150000 has to be paid as Dia ( blood money). Besides, has the RTA considered the possibility of these men eventually getting promoted, having better jobs and earning much more than their present salaries ? If these victims belonged to a higher class of society, the story would have been different. Has justice been done ? I wonder !
