Udupi, Jun 21: Heavy rain continued for the third day, inundating Kadiali ward and severely affecting normal life. Municipal councillor Geetha Shet visited the place and complained about it to the commissioner.
The recently concluded circus show at Royal Garden was cleared but the ground does not have proper drainage facility. The rain water has flooded the locality and entered in nearly twenty houses. The ground is owned by a private party. There is only an inlet for water on one side of the ground. There is no drain or pipeline for the outflow of water. Locals say that 2.5 feet should have been left for pathway.
As per Somashekar, a local, the problem recurs every year. “The corporation does not take up constructive measures. Living becomes difficult when water enters houses. Changing residence is an option but we do not know where to go urgently. Commissioner Manjunathayya who paid a visit has said that he will ask the officials to construct drains for the outflow of water.”
A couple in another house, Srinivasa Bhat and Girija are old. Girija is not able to walk due to leg pain. They have to cross dining room to go to the kitchen. “There is knee deep water in the dining room and we do not know what to do. Though there is drainage in the ward, it is not being maintained,” they said.
There is a well in the yard and the water in the well and in the yard is on the same level.
The problem is not confined to a single ward. The localities such as Bailakere, Kalmadi, Nergi and several others are flooded during rainy season.
A permanent solution should be found by the corporation after holding discussions.
