Mangalore, Nov 12: Hindustani music aficionados are in for a veritable treat with the Sangeet Bharati foundation organizing ‘Swara Laya Yatra’. Music lovers here witnessed five rare concerts featuring various eminent artistes in the course of the day-long event, with the inaugural event of the series called "Bhairav - Kalyan Utsav" kick-starting off at the Town Hall on Sunday, November 11.

The morning session which began from 9 am to1 pm provided an exquisite musical feast to music admirers. It started with the vocal concert by Mumbai-based renowned vocalist Arati Anklikar who was accompanied by Vyasamurthi Katti on the harmonium and Uday Rajpurkar on the tabla, who enthralled the audience with her composition "Rasiya Mahara" followed by "Jagore man jago", "Ri maina janoo kaisi lagi lagan", "Choom chananana bichua" etc. Ustad Rafique Khan also presented the satwik veena, vocal music and sitar recitals respectively in the morning session.

After this performance, renowned flautist Surmani Praveen Godkhindi, son of noted flautist Pt Venkatesh Godkhindi took the stage and mesmerized the audience with his flute recital. He was accompanied on tabla by Rajendra Nakod. His presentation of the rare raga Hindol-Bahar was the most evocative. He concluded with a beautiful “Bhatiyali Dhun”.

In the post lunch session from 2.30 to 9 pm Sandeep Chatterjee of Kolkata (santoor) and Pt Upendra Bhat of Pune performed. There was also performance in the afternoon session by Salil Bhat disciple of Pt Vishwa Mohan Bhat.

The final concert of the day was by Gundecha brothers from Bhopal which started around 6.30, which was indeed a real treat for city music buffs. Rajendra Nakod, Udayraj Karpur, both from Bangalore and Pintu Das from Kolkata accompanied the artistes on tabla, while Manik Munder from Pune accompanied with “Pakhavaz”, Vyasmurthy Katti from Bangalore and Narendra L Nayak from the city accompanied them on harmonium.

The Swara Laya Yatra series will continue till December 16 on every Sunday. Except the last event all concerts are scheduled to be held at the Town hall. The final function will be held in the University college premises, Hampankatta. The final concert will bring tabla maestro ustad Zakir Hussain and sarangi artist ustad Sultan Khan together.

    Hats off to Ustad Rafique Khan and Sangeet Bharathi Foundation for conducting this programme. All Mangaloreans should encourage this programme so that in future also these kind of programmes are conducted.
