Puttur, Nov 14: Two persons were killed in an accident which took place on Wednesday November 14 afternoon, in the outskirts of city at Narimogru–Kedagady level crossing
For the first time in the history of Puttur a fatal accident took place at an unguarded railway level crossing killing two persons. The duo died instantly when their jeep was rammed by a speeding train. The deceased are being identified as Elyanna Gowda, the jeep driver and Ibrahim. The injured has been identified as Latif. His condition is too serious and he is fighting for life in a private hospital, said sources.
The all-party executive committee of the city, held the ‘Rail Rokho’ on Wednesday afternoon, to urge the South Western Railway (SWR) authorities, to begin Mangalore–Bangalore train services. The agitators blocked a goods train, running on the tracks though they had originally planned to block the Mangalore–Puttur train. Since the latter was late owing to some technical snags, the agitators blocked the good train running on the same route.
The said accident took a little while later when the jeep driver tried to cross the railway level crossing without noticing the arrival of train at Narimogru–Kedagady, about 5 kms away from city’s railway station. As a result, the jeep was crushed by the speeding train and Elyanna Gowda and Ibrahim were killed on the spot while Latif sustained fatal injuries.
Since this was for the first time that this kind of an accident took place in the taluk, a large number of people gathered to see the horror scene. The railway officials and police officers also arrived at the scene. Some sources said that that Elyanna Gowda was on his way to distribute wedding invitations.
