Udupi Nov 17: The year-long celebrations along-with the alumni meeting and the 10th annual day – decennial celebrations of the Manipal Institute of Communications (MIC) a constituent of the Manipal University was held here on Friday November 16. As part of the decennial celebrations, the institute will be organizing exhibitions, seminars, workshops, talks and other media-related activities throughout the year.
Speaking on the occasion Rajasekharan P Warrier, vice-chancellor of Manipal University advised that “journalists should do unbiased reporting”. He lauded them saying that journalists were people with immense courage. Giving an example, he said that when hurricane Katrina hit the American state of New Orleans a few years back, the journalists were there on the spot to report on the havoc caused by the storm.
Further, he opined that many students doing journalism aspired to become high-flying journalists receiving hefty salaries. While there is nothing wrong in doing so, he advised that at least a few of them should take up teaching (journalism), as there is a shortage of good teachers, he opined.
The chairman of Prasar Bharati, M V Kamath, who is also the honorary director of MIC, speaking on the occasion said that journalists and students should inculcate a sense of nationalism within themselves, that they are “Indians first and last” he declared.
According to Kamath, recalling the past he stated that the stroke of midnight of August 14, 1947 was the most memorable day of his life. He was reporting the event for the “Free Press Journal” and the Indian tri-colour was unfurled, everyone had gathered together and they wept and clapped elatedly on gaining independence for the country.
Pro-chancellor of Manipal University, H S Ballal, also participated in the inaugural function of the decennial celebrations of MIC.
