Mangalore, Nov 17: The 15th state-level children’s national science conference for high school students is being held here at the Pilikula Nisargadhama. The conference was inaugurated by Prof K M Kaveriappa, vice-chancellor of Mangalore University on Friday, November 16.
Kavita Dinesh, the president of Mudushedde village panchayat, zilla panchayat member Vinod Mada, DC headquarter’s assistant Prabhakar Sharma, zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) A M Kujnappa and DDPI Chame Gowda were the chief guests on the occasion.
Krishna Palemar, MLA of Suratkal presided over the function. Anvita, a budding young scientist spoke on the occasion and expressed her views. C D Patil, honourary secretary of Karnataka State Science Council delivered the introductory speech. J R Lobo, member secretary of Pilikula Science Centre Society, welcomed the gathering. Dr K V Rao, director (training) of Pilikula Nisargadhama Society, proposed the vote of thanks.
Around 1000 students, representing different districts of Karnataka are participating in this conference. The children have so far demonstrated the models pertaining to various successful agricultural experiments that have taken place in their respective districts.
A snake show was held at Pilikula on the occasion in which students and teachers participated with great zeal. The members of animal care trust Charles, Sathish, Laster Mahesh, Dunesh and Jayaprakash Bhandary displayed various species of snakes and explained their characteristics. When the python was brought onto the stage, the students and teachers rushed forward to touch the huge python. Later a question-and- answer session about the snakes was held, in which the instructor had a tough time answering the umpteen number of questions raised by the over enthusiastic children.
Speaking to Daijiworld, Dr K V Rao informed that the central theme of this year’s science conference is ‘biodiversity.’ According to him, Pilikula is known for its activities in connection with biodiversity. Therefore, this location has been selected, he added.
