Bengaluru, Jul 16: It is gathered that in spite of their best efforts, officials of criminal investigation department (CID), entrusted with the task of investigating the case of deputy superintendent of police (DySP), Ganapati's suicide, have not been able to find the angles of family disputes or depression as claimed by the government. Preliminary investigations from different angles have led them to conclude that professional problem was the major contributor to his suicide. Sources said that leakage of this information has given rise to political upheavals.
'Leaked' report
The officers have found, as per reports, that harassment by senior officers was the major contributor to the decision by the police officer to kill himself. The information that is said to have leaked to the media is exactly opposite of what the government had claimed. The officers reportedly found no support whatever to the argument of the government that depression and family problems had caused his death.
It is said that CID has stumbled upon certain information which has confirmed that what Ganapati said in the television interview were true facts. The allegation that minister, K J George, intelligence additional director general of police, A M Prasad and Lokayukta inspector general of police Pranav Mohanty, had harassed Ganapati in professional life were reportedly found to be true. The investigation also finds that local police had committed dereliction of duty. Although the Madikeri police came to know about the DySP's death at 5 pm, they did not take any measures till 8 pm. The seriousness and speed with which the investigation should have moved considering the death of a police officer of DySP rank was missing. Family members were not informed immediately.
The way police behaved in the issue have given rise to doubts about their intentions, the report feels. The police who registered unnatural death case did not change it even after it came to be known what Ganapati had said just before his death. Police circle inspector, Medappa, did not provide proper information to the father of Ganapati, Kushalappa, when he came to the hotel after learning about the suicide by his son. The police reportedly obtained statement on the lines they wanted from Kushalappa, who did not know what his son had said in the television interview, but failed to obtain statement of Ganapati's wife, Pavana, when she visited the hotel thereafter.
No preliminary report received - Siddaramaiah
Responding to these informations, state chief minister, Siddaramaiah, said that the government has not received any preliminary report or interim report on the episode. He dismissed the leakage of report as media creation. He said that the government will not interfere with this investigation and that minister George was innocent. The criminal investigation department too said that no interim report on this case was submitted to the government. CID director general of police, Kishore Chandra, refused to respond to rumours. CID inspector general of police, Hemant Nimbalkar, also said that these were baseless rumours.
In the meanwhile, Chikkamagaluru district superintendent of police, Santosh Babu, and local BJP MLA, C T Ravi, are expected to face the heat of CID investigation. As per the preliminary information collected by the CID, DySP, Kallappa Handibag, who committed suicide, did not get any money as alleged. There are rumours that Kallappa became victim of a carefully woven plan of some people including a Hindu leader.
