Dalit protests spread in Guj, cop killed in attack, buses targeted

Rajkot, Jul 19 (PTI) : Dalit protests in Gujarat spread to several parts of the state including Ahmedabad today unleashing violence in which a head constable was killed in stone pelting and state transport buses attacked while three more members of the community allegedly attempted suicide.

The dalits are protesting against the brutal assault on fellow community members on July 11 for allegedly skinning a cow in Una in Gir-Somnath district. "Head Constable with local crime branch Pankaj Amreli was injured in stone-pelting in Amreli town. He died during treatment at Rajkot hospital. Ten other persons including protestrs and policemen have been injured," police said.

Today, three youths attempted to kill themselves by consuming poison at their residential society in Batwa town in Junagadh district, Police said.

After seven Dalit youths attempted suicide at Gondal and Jamkandorna in Rajkot district against the assault yesterday, several incidents of damage to state transport buses and road blockades were reported from different parts of Saurashtra region across Junagadh, Jamnagar, Rajkot and Amreli districts since late last night. The protests also spread to Ahmedabad, where dozens of Dalits were detained, police said.

While a bus was torched in Dhoraji town of Rajkot district and several others damaged, protestors allegedly vandalised sheds for Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in Rajkot late last night, police said.

"Dinesh Parmar (21), Dinesh Vegra (23) and Rasik Vinjura (40) gathered at Ambedkar Nagar society and consumed poison to protest against the beating (of Dalit youths in Una). We rushed them to Junagadh civil hospital for treatment," police said, adding their condition is stable.

Hundreds of protesters gathered at Chital road locality in Amreli town this morning and started hurling stones at police who in turn fired two teargas shells to disperse them. In Surendranagar, agitators blocked a highway by putting carcass of a cow in the middle of the road, police said.

In the wake of the tense situation, the state road transport department today suspended bus services from Porbandar and other parts as protesters continued to block roads.

Some persons hurled stones at Ahmedabad-Veraval train as it was entering Rajkot, injuring an assistant driver last night, police said. "There was a report of BRTS buses being ransacked by the community members and several public transport vehicles also being ransacked," DCP, Rajkot, Karanraj Vaghela said. He said situation is under control and no untoward incident has taken place in Rajkot today.

The opposition Congress demanded a probe by a sitting High Court judge into the Una incident. Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel tweeted, "Failure of authorities to protect Dalits in Gujarat is absolutely shocking. Is it the Gujarat model? Independent probe is need of the hour".

Nine persons have been arrested so far in connection with the assault on Dalits, while three policemen have been suspended for dereliction of duty.

Dear Shetty, don't be a blind follower of any political party. For ages these poor dalits are living on cleaning others dirt, eating others left over food, skinning of dead animals etc. This was happening in our village as well. It is their profession. Did you see on TV how those humans were tied, stripped and were mercilessly beaten by an evil man ? Who is this guy to take law in his hand ? Who the hell these people think they are ? Above law ? Then why we need Judiciary and Police ? Ofcours, I am dead against cattle stealing. We MUST respect religious sentiments of every religion for a peaceful co-existence. Then, these dalits, are they not Hindus ? If at all these goons wants to promote cow as religious symbol, why they don't protest and stop beef export ? Mr. Shetty, don't be fooled by politicians. Neither they love God, nor they love you and me. They are addicted to power and wealth. Pls. check how many cows does this evil man who was attacking innocent dalits is taking care of. For these people dead animal is more valuable than a living human ? Chi....chi.

So called activists taking law in their hand. Activists tied the victims to the vehicle and started beating them black and blue.
This is the first step towards becoming terrorists, unless plucked out in bud itself. If Govt. supports this then it is called state sponsored terror. We have experienced and witnessed this in Mangalore a few years back.

If they really find someone slaughtering a cow, which is against Law, why can't they hand over them to Police? Let law take its course than you delivering the Judgment. When Righteous man Baliga was murdered who belongs to the same religion and worshiped the same god, you guys are quick to say ‘’Law will take its own course, we do not have to worry.’’

What a pity in the city..

Today dalits are taking revenge against the assault to their fellows for skinning the cow. For communals Muslim community always becoming soft target . Right wing groups used these dalits against the muslims during Gujarat riots in 2002 and now they tasting their own medicine.

Blocking peoples food and attacking them like animals on the basis of caste/ religion, bound to have repercussions.
Even animals have protectors, How can Govt expect humans to keep quiet when their food is deprived?
Will a Lion or a Big Fish keep quiet, if it is denied food? Everyone would have their choice of food.

We can't go against nature, there is a norm. Chicken eats worms, we eat chicken.

Dear friend, since BJP came into power in India, human beings were pushed downwards and the cattle kingdom became the rulers.

Emergency contract numbers to save the cows in Haryana whereas human beings will be discarded to the gutter.

Where in the Hindu scriptures the beef eating is strictly prohibited?
How many millions of tons of beef is exported from Gujarat, but for skinning a cow, the street goons killed human beings.

We are witnessing pure madness in India which will be turning as a laughing stock of the whole world.

The Patel community got another partner.

Rs. 2000 crore Sardar Vallabhai Patel Statue didn't do any healing miracle for the Patel community.

The BJP's Dr. Ambekhar potrait worship will not create any soothing miracle to appease the 300 million Dalits who were looked down at simply as a vote bank by the high caste party BJP/RSS/VHP/BD etc. The high caste party's real color can be observed in the streets, how the Dalits are treated. Amith Shaw sat down and ate with some Dalits as a political vote strategy Mr. Modi appointed some Ministers to the cabinet mainly from U.P. to canvas the Dalits........ but the reality is a different story.

Without any apology, I am repeating the same vocabulary that now India is experiencing Gujarathi Imperialism: and now the electorate from east to west and north to south are feeling the wind of that rule. The minorities are under stress, the Dalits are being oppressed, the opposition parties all across India have been targeted for the wiping off dream march of the current Central Government of India.
