New Delhi, Jun 24: Shilajit, a black-brown natural substance found in the Himalayas and other mountainous regions, is gaining global popularity for its health benefits. Traditionally used in Ayurveda, shilajit is rich in fulvic acid, amino acids, polyphenols, and other bioactive compounds, known to boost energy, immunity, and hormonal balance.
Studies have confirmed its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Research published in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology shows it reduces oxidative stress, while another study indicates it may help prevent Alzheimer’s by blocking tau protein buildup.
Shilajit is also linked to increased testosterone levels. In a 90-day trial, men aged 45–55 showed significant improvement in hormone levels. Additionally, its antiviral effects have been seen against RSV, HSV, and HIV, with its fulvic content strengthening immune response.
Clinically, shilajit has aided fracture healing. Trials in Iran reported quicker recovery in patients post-surgery, highlighting its benefits for bone health.
Despite its advantages, doctors advise caution. People with hormone-sensitive conditions or on hypertension medication should consult a physician before use. Overuse may lead to digestive issues, low blood pressure, iron overload, or liver toxicity. Experts also warn against unregulated supplements, which may contain harmful metals or toxins.
While shilajit holds promise for health and wellness, experts urge responsible use and medical consultation.
