Patna, Nov 22: A newly married woman was gang-raped in a running train in Bihar by five armed men who also abducted her husband at gun-point, police said on Wednesday.

The victim, in her early 20s, tried to commit suicide by jumping from Patna's Gandhi Setu bridge into the river Ganges but she was rescued by people who rushed her to the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition here on Tuesday.

Her medical examination confirmed the gang-rape the previous night, police said here.

Police official Ashok Kumar said that the victim, a resident of a village near Harnaut in Nalanda district, told police she had been gang-raped in the running Patna-Jajha train near the Barahia railway station by five armed criminals when she and her husband were alone in the train compartment.

Uma Shankar, one of the doctors treating her, said her condition was stable now but she was still in a semi-conscious state. "It will take another two to three days for her to recover from the shock," he said.
