Udupi, Nov 22: Yakshagana is one of the best resources for the students pursuing theatre arts, New Delhi-based National School of Drama president Dr Devendra Raj Ankur has said.
He was speaking after inaugurating a nine-day Festival of Traditional and Ritualistic Theatre, being held under the auspices of NSD, Academy of General Education, Manipal, Yakshagana Kendra Udupi, MGM College Udupi and Regional Resources Centre for Folk Performing Arts, Udupi, here on Tuesday.
“Yakshagana is energetic and forceful means of art,” he stressed. Registrar of the Academy of General Education, K K Pai presided over the programme. Director of Rangayana and camp director Chidambar Rao, Jambe, Principal of MGM College, Dr Jayaprakash Mavinakuli, Director of Yakshagana Kendra, H Krishna Bhat, Principal of Yakshagana Kendra, Sanjeeva Suvarna and others were present.
As part of the syllabus, an Yakshagana Jodata by Amritheshwari Mela, Sigandooru, was held at the MGM campus on Tuesday night.
‘Panchavati’ will be played by Yaksha Manjusha on November 21 and a field play has been organised on November 23, Folkdrama Avvennavva on November 24, Yakshagana ballet directed by Sanjeeva Suvarna on ‘Jatayu Moksha’ on November 24 (all at 6 pm), Talamaddale on ‘Pattabhisheka’ at 10 am and Mudalapaya Yakshagana at 6 pm on November 25 will also be played.
A string puppet show by the Sri Gopalakrishna Bombeyata Sangha on November 26 in Kasaragod and Bhoota Kola on November 27 at Inna will be held. On November 28, Doddata on Girija Kalyana have also been organised from 6 pm.
