Udupi, Jul 30: The much-awaited demand of making picnic spot 'Mannu Palla Lake' open for nature lovers has finally been realized. The lake authority has decided to open the place for public to enjoy its scenic beauty.
Located just three kilometres away from Udupi, the lake attracts nature lovers from all places far and near.
Mannu Palla development committee, chaired by district commissioner, has been formed to look after the development of the lake. During the term of former DC M T Reju (2011), a proposal of Rs 5 crore was submitted to tourism and urban development department for its development.
The tourism department had released Rs 80 lac in first phase which was used for building two kilometres long six feet wide jogging track with interlock tiles around the lake. Now six feet wide walking track is being constructed along the lake for people. This path will be helpful for senior citizens.
Moreover, Rs. 1.32 crore has been spent for fencing, construction of a water tank, installation of 40 solar lamps, 36 granites benches, steel dustbins and boards recently at the lake.
Nirmithi Kendra Udupi floated tenders to develop the lake through Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode under finance, operate, design, and overall developments last year.
Nagaraj, a developer, took this project just two months back on five-year lease. The committee is not just aiming to develop the lake but also facilitate water sports and recreational activities for tourists.
“I took the work as my hobby. I will develop this place as the hot spot of tourism. I plan to plant 9000 flower plants in next four months to beautify the location. There is no entry fee but we charge for boating,” said Nagaraj. Under his supervision, a fast food cafe has been opened on July 29.
In five months time, Nagaraj plans to build an auditorium with a capacity of 5,000 people and a small hall with a seating capacity for 2,000 people along with advanced restaurants.
“To maintain the place, we need Rs 1 lac per month which includes maintenance of lake, playground, roads, garden and its surroundings. I am also looking forward to sponsors and donors who are interested to invest in this place. There is no doubt that this spot will be one of the most sought after picnic spots in coming days,” said confident Nagaraj.
