Udupi, Nov 27: Another landmark was created in Kasturba Hospital, Manipal near here on Monday November 26, as the doctors successfully performed Embolisation procedure to treat a patient suffering from severe head injury.
According to the press release issued by the hospital, Embolisation is an interventional procedure which involves the intentional blockage of an artery or vein to stop the flow of blood through the desired vessel using radio images.
In order to prevent internal haemorrhage this treatment is used, a press release stated.
According to the doctors, the patient had sustained severe injury in his head and face. His left eye had become reddish and swollen. He was finding hard to open his eyes and was complaining of having dim vision.
Through further investigations it was noted that there was a tear in a major blood vessel in the deep part of brain.
Radio-diagnosis and imaging team led by Dr V R K Rao, with the help of X-ray images on TV, inserted a thin long micro tube into the blood vessel through a small nick in the skin of thigh then a large number of platinum spring coils were deposited into the area.
The blood flow in the deep part of the brain was protected by depositing platinum coils by electrolysis. Complete closure of the tear in the major blood vessel was confirmed by injecting Opaque Medicine while obtaining rapid serial X-ray images.
The patient responded well to the surgery and within 24 hours the swelling of the eyes was reduced by 75 per cent. The patient was able to open his eye.
