Mangalore, Nov 28: District Commissioner (DC) M Maheshwar Rao called-off the meeting related to Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ), owing to the strong opposition of the villagerson Wednesday, November 28 at Bajpe church hall.

The meeting was organized here by MSEZ officers to discuss about the project. But, the locals raised objections on issues of grave concern to them.

The MSEZ has not received clearance from the Pollution Control Board. The Supreme Court (SC) has clearly stated that the SEZ should obtain clearance certificate from the Pollution Control Board, before it could start the project. Hence, the MSEZ is violating the SC order, the locals alleged.

The reports distributed by the MSEZ authorities to the villagers here are printed in English, which could not be understood by the common person. The locals urged the MSEZ authorities to print the reports in local language and a simple manner, for their understanding. At the same time, the locals demanded to convene one more meeting on MSEZ, in order to discuss the major issues that concerned most.

In view of hot debate and protest by the villagers, DC Maheshwar Rao, called-off the meeting.

MSEZ CEO A G Pai, officer Raghavendra Holla, MLA Krishna Palemar, former MLA Vijaykumar Shetty, Zilla Panchayat members Shaila Sequeira and Victoria D’Cunha, political leaders Moiddin Bava, J S Noronha and others were present on this occasion.

There was a time when local BJP leaders and supporters had gone hammer and tongs at Mani Shanker Iyer for trying to prevent (or so they said) the SEZ from coming to Mangalore. Where are they now that people have started opposing it? Do they still exist or are they still playing political games in Bangalore?

The people who are opposing the SEZ are not those innocent villagers, most of them are Gulf returned people who have already made their assets. There is no chance that the temperature to go up to 50 Deg. Take the example of Mumbai which is also in west coast, there are lot of industries, but temperature is within limit. We should have open mind, there are opportunities for our people to get jobs and also directly or indirectly locals are only benifited by SEZ. The SEZ will go to Tamilnadu if we keep opposing it and we will never prosper.

I, fully support the villagers. There is no wasteland in Dk district, if they want to develope more SEZ, let them do it in a place like BELLARY, BIJAPUR, BIDAR AND GULBARGA district, wastland is availble abundantly. It is our moral duty of every DK citizen to protect our agricultural land.

This project utterly is of no use in Green City Mangalore. The land in Mangalore is Fertile land. I think 3/4th land itself will be for ONGC and this Giant Project will definitely harmful to environment and specially Mangalore. Already the heat in Mangalore we are getting which is produced by MRPL. People who are residing surrounding areas know well.

If ONGC comes then Mangalore will experience above 50 degree centigrade all the year. Of course, development needed to cope up with unemployment problem. Such Giant projects can be switched over to Eg: Hassan or Chitradurga where we can find barren land and not de-foresting the green land and errecting the Projects. Why should we think Industrialization is the only way to solve the unemployment problem. This is the time to switch over to "GREEN REVOLUTION" as our Great Ex-president Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam addressed wherever he use to go. Therefore please the idea of bringing the project to Mangalore.

Where are our congress leaders (B Janardhan Poojary ,Moily and others) who were claiming that they are the people who are responsible for bringing SEZ to Mangalore during June 2006 when PM was supposed to inaugurate the Petrochemical complex.I think they will come again when SEZ becomes areality, but not now when public is against the SEZ.

The sea water level will rise by about 15 feet by the year 2050. Then why DC is bent upon establishing a SEZ in a place which will go under water. Let him read the final report of global warming presented by UNO. Please understand the world as a whole before establishing anything called SEZ.

Public hearing organised by KSPC Board at Bajpe on 28th November was grossly violation of law. EIA reports were not given to local people in local vernacular. When people demanded for postponement of the meeting till the supply of Kannada copies DC rejected their demand DC without assigning any reason abruptly cancelled the meeting and walked .This is a clear example how beuracracy ignores public opinion and using their offices in favour of the might.

In the interest of people and to preserve the eco fragile nature of the district MSEZ and other mega industires should not be allowed in our district. Therefore I assert the government: 1.As per govt order Carrying capacity should be done before clearing any projects in D.K.and Udupi. 2.Govt.spent 30 crores on (Danida conducted)  EMPStudy of D.K.which recommended our natural resources are under pressure and action plan should be implemented according to the recommendations of the study team 3.Acording to rules SEZ should be established in wastelands. But in D.K.there is no concept of wastelands. Therefore MSEZ attempt to acquire fertile agricultural lands is illegeal. it will have no right to deprive people from right to life. 4.there is no example where industries kept to their promises. Therefore the struggle put up by the farmers and the poor of the seven villages around Permude to safeguard their life and livelihood is justified.

Development is required. At the same time the interest of the land owners has to be protected by giving the good compensation, training and jobs, good rehabilitation package, minimum envoirnment problem, job opportunities for the Coastal people has to be ensured. To get this protest and peoples committees, association is required. Otherwise the so called industries as well as Government will not fullfill the promises given at the time of acquiring the land. The people should be very cautious and get all the benefits.

All these kind of meetings are of no use. If at all the authorities are not considering the poor people's concerns, and they just wanted to implement the project like Nagarjuna Power, All promises are just to fool the locals. Everyone in Mangalore can see how the MRPL, NPCL and other industries are fooling the qualified people of mangalore. All the meetings, promises and public hearing are just political games. Once they are are through, all employment oppurtunity goes to keralites, tamils and andhra babus.

These companies feel locals will create problem for them if they given jobs., So why these companies give job promises at initial...? Why the Samithis and Politicians are silent now..? Recently there was employment call for NPCL, all qualified peole have applied, but they recruited from Andhra, kerala not from Mangalore...? why this happens with us...? why we get cheated..?

I fully support the villagers. Let A. G. Pai and co leave their houses and start relocating to a new strange place. Then they'll understand the plight of the villagers. There should be very strict, politically independent pollution control committee, because it is the life and death matter for the lcals and their future generation. Locals are very good at cutting corners. Let the MSEz be started in rajasthn desert.
