Rebel MLAs thumb their nose at Gowda
Times of India
Bangalore, Nov 29: JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda rushing directly from the airport on Tuesday night to meet him also did not sway rebel party leader M P Prakash from going ahead with his parallel meeting here on Wednesday.
The meeting attended by 15 (JDS) MLAs, 3 MLCs and 2 Independents marked the vertical split of the party — with the legislators deciding to boycott the meeting convened by Gowda On Thursday.
The dissident legislators, who are unhappy over unilateral decisions taken by Gowda over the last few weeks, decided to stay away from Thursday’s meeting called by the party leadership to discuss the political situation after the BJP government resigned earlier this month.
They decided to meet again after eight days and “announce their decision”.
“We decided not to attend Thursday’s meeting as it’s not an executive meeting; it’s a public meeting and no purpose will be served,” Prakash told reporters.
In a setback to former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, his loyalists N Cheluvarayaswamy and H C Balakrishna attended the rebel meeting.
Prakash explained that it was decided to meet after eight days as more MLAs had expressed their desire to join them and that “the picture is still not clear as the assembly is yet to be dissolved.”
According to him, five MLAs informed him telephonically and through friends that they wanted to attend today’s meeting but could not do so as they were away.
Asked if the group of MLAs would join any party and form their own outfit, Prakash said no such issues were discussed. “It was decided that we should remain united,” he said.
Asked if they are the real JD(S), he said: “We are the real JD(S). We are not severing links with JD(S).”
Obviously referring to the flip-flops of JD(S), he said recent happenings in the party have hurt and perturbed MLAs and tarnished the image of the party and workers feel let down by the party leadership.
Wednesday’s meeting — which he said was aimed at “creation” of democracy (in the party) — was also attended by “like-minded leaders”, united in their opposition to Gowda’s style of functioning. “The recent decisions taken by the party were not desirable and not conducive to democratic principles,” he said.
JD(S) spokesperson Y S V Datta sought to downplay the rebel meeting and said: “With dissolution of the state assembly shortly, MLAs have no role to play; at Thursday’s meeting, we will discuss strategy to face elections.”
