Mumbai, Nov 29: India is a vast country with talented human resources. But finding the talent and training is the major process in nurturing the talent.  This has been a major hurdle that has made our country to remain at the back rows. Our system lacks this process where in up and coming talents are recognized and then groomed to bloom.

Though cricket is a major game of India, at times right players were never inducted in our national team. Most of the talent is hidden and never identified.

Denver Blenson Mendonca, student of Don Bosco High School, Shirva studying in 8th standard is one such example.

He has been selected to represent Karnataka in the National-Level Cricket Championship (under 14 category) which was held recently.

Denver never knew that he can play a good game until his sports teacher offered him to play at the taluk-level, in under-14 category, two months ago. Till then he never played cricket using a hard ball. He had only played evening cricket using tennis ball along with his fellow village boys just for fun.

It may be just like opening his fortune. As it was necessary to send a school team to play at the national-level, his sports teacher observed all children playing using a tennis ball. He found Denver quite talented. He selected him for the school team in the month of September this year. It is thien for the first time that Denver played with a hard ball and started practicing for the sake of school team.

When he represented his school team in the month of September everyone was amazed with the bowling of Denver as he bagged several wickets. Thus he was selected to play at the district-level.

In the same month the district level match was held at Ajjarkad Udupi. He was later selected to play at the state-level too. The state-level match was held at Karwar in the month of October. Denver repeated the good performance taking three wickets in three matches. So he was selected to play in the national-level to represent Karnataka team.

Denver played four matches against Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. His team won matches against Orissa and Rajasthan but lost to other two states. But in these four matches he took 6 wickets and showed his talent once again.

Denver never went for any training or coaching in cricket yet he played a good game.

“I am happy about the achievement of my son but I do not know how to give him training so that he can build his career in cricket,” said Benedicta Mendonca, mother of Denver who is a housewife.

His father Dennis Mendonca works abroad and is very happy about the achievement of his son. He has one elder brother Donald who is pursuing his studies in Bangalore.

Denver, congrats. Be focussed. Pick a professional coach. Keep practising at nets. Start from how legendary waseem akram used to practise. Keep bowling at single stump on nets. This will make your line consistent. Than concentrate on length, swing etc. Line dominates over everything practise makes one perfect. Good luck mate..

Hi Denver, I love any sport but have a soft corner for cricket. Its great to achieve what you have with the help of your sports teacher in such a short span of time. Andy Roberts held the leather ball for the first time at the age of 16. You will do well mate. Please dont get carried away as a lot of hard work is yet to be done if you have to play for India.

Hope you wouldn't mind a few tips from me: 1. Pick a cricket idol. Ambrose, Lillee, Hadlee. Try be like them. 2. Perform consistently and be mentally strong. Its a mind game at the highest level. 3. Dont lose hope if you haven't performed well in a match. Try harder next time. 4. Learn from your mistakes. Dont repeat them. 5. Manage your school and cricket very well. If you are exceling in cricket you will have to sacrifice on school work.

Schooling is very important in India as cricket is not a profession until you are in the Indian Eleven. I live in Melbourne and am excited about the Indian cricket team visiting Australia. I haven't missed any international cricket matches played in Melbourne since I have moved here. Would be looking forward to see you in Melbourne with Indian cricket team. Wish you all the best young man. Make us all proud. Good luck for all the matches you will be playing this season. Cheers Andrew Dominic

Well done Denver. It is always heartening when one sees a homegrown product flourishing outside. Denver certainly is one of the very few from our district to play for the state at the national level. Although there have been so many promising performers from Mangalore and Dakshina Kannada, due to various factors not many have moved up the ladder. I have repeatedly said that there is plenty of talent and potential especially in the vast villages spread throughout India. It is only now one is slowly seeing playing from the unknown regions coming to the fore starting with Indian cricket and hockey.

In the past, it was only players from the capital city who would get ed both for the State team and the National side too. I have seen so many of my mogaveera friends excelling in track and field events. Being from the sea coast, these boys had tremendous stamina and speed and would win any competition beating the town boys outright. A couple of them went to the national level, but most of them faded away due to lack of infrastructure and proper support.

With the Indian economy now on the upward scale, the authorities should also pay attention to the sports and games of India to take a leap in the international arena. Funds and facilities should be made available and the youngsters should be trained right from the word 'go'. That will be the time when India will shine on all fronts. Denver's ion should set an example for all other aspiring boys and girls from our District to take the courage to aim for golden glory. I hope we will hear more of Denver's feats in the coming days as he brushes shoulders with the best in the game. All Shirva should surely celebrate !
