New hanging bridge to connect two taluks, boatman becomes jobless

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 12: District in-charge minister, B Ramanath Rai, on Thursday August 11, inaugurated the hanging bridge that has been newly built across River Falguni. The bridge connects Muttur in Mangaluru taluk with Badagabellur in Bantwal taluk.

Rai said that with the dedicating of this bridge to the world, this area has opened itself up for tourism as it has good potential in this segment. He felt that there is a need to create extra facilities for tourists in the region by the tourism department.

This happens to be the 127th hanging bridge built by Sullia-based engineer, Girish Bharadwaj. Girish said that subject to timely maintenance, this hanging bridge will have a life of 100 years.

Boatman becomes jobless

Strangely, the new bridge also cast clouds of uncertainty in the life of one person. K Abubakker, a local boatman, who was transporting people across the river for the last 30 years, is worried at the prospects of losing his earning. He says that he is the only earning member of his family, as his son, a graduate, has not found any employment so far, and the source of income from the daily commuters has dried up with the inauguration of the hanging bridge.

MLA, Mohiuddin Bava, presided over the function. Chairman of Coastal Development Authority, Nivedit Alva, zilla panchayat member, Janardana Gowda, zilla panchayat president, Meenakshi Shantigodu, and presidents of both Badagabellur and Muttur gram panchayats were present.

Any development results in displacement of some work force. Government should provide the boatman financial help with 4% interest to buy an auto-rickshaw for his livelihood.

Make sure No vehicles are allowed on this Bridge unless pushed otherwise its a disaster recipe.I have noticed inspite of such warnings two wheelers donot respect it at similar bridges. Indians plan inagurate a project, but no concept of annual repair and maintenance.

Sad to hear where a motorable road to all vilages should have been, we are constructing hanging bridge.

When I was small, my mother was carrying her agricultural produce on her head for sale. I have grown up to carry her in a car for our visits to the city.

Mr. Abubakkar, nobody brought a job to me on a platter. You should have already prepared your son for this day - 30 years is too long. You may have ferried 5-10 people at a time, the bridge transports hundreds.

Bless the developments, don't wish we remain where we were 30 years ago !

    just appreciate your comments madam.

let us not ask the government for our individual livelihood. let government do community work like the one bridge in this article.

let each individual plan his / her family expenditures & live within limits.

all of us should think before having second child, from where the resources will come for livelihood of the child... can any government feed 130 crores of Indian citizen , if everyone have a BPL card? let everyone contribute to the nation by "trying"( at least trying !!!) to become self sufficient...

    just shred my thoughts...

Agree with you Kumar. Help is inevitable for one generation, withing that time-frame a family should get on its feet. If generations after generations are to be looked after by the government, we are moving backwards, not forward.

Yes, number of children must be as per our ability to raise them, not as per our fertility rate !

Hanging bridge plan for Thannirbavi from Sultan Battery is already dropped. I think they are planning to build bridge for movement of vehicles which is the need of hour. Mr. Lobo should do the necessary work in this regard. If the permanent bridge is build then the Thannirbavi beach will be nearest to the city. Also this will help the local people and beach goers, who otherwise will have to travel an extra 10-15 km. The place where the bridge lands near Fathima church in Thannir bavi is exactly at the centre between Kuloor bridge and Bengre.
