Mangalore: Historic Kadri Kambla brings back the glory of Tulunadu

Mangalore, Dec 2: Hundreds witnessed the historic Kadri Manjunatha annual Kambla (buffalo race), one of the oldest kamblas in Dakshina Kannada district, held on Sunday, December 2 at the famous Kadri Kambla field.
Kadri Kambala, also known as Devera Kambla as it is dedicated to the presiding deity of Kadri Manjunatheshwara, brought back the glory of Tulunadu on Sunday. The venue wore a festive look.

Kambla began in the afternoon and ended before sunset. Kannada Sahitya Parishat former president Harikrishna Punaroor inaugurated the kambla.

Baffalo race was held in ‘Kane Halage’, ‘Hagga Hiriya’ and ‘Hagga Kiriya’ categories. 

This year’s Guttu award, a gold medal instituted in the memory of late Balakrishna Shetty, one of the organizers of Kadri kambla was given to Kadri Rudrayya, a social worker.

In addition, the Dakshina Kannada District Kambla committee, presented its “Kambala Shrestha Award” for 2006-07 to 12 persons during the occasion.

This included six owners of pairs of buffalos and an equal number of people who steered the pairs during the race.

Earlier in the morning separate competitions for men and women like ‘Thayappangai (local version of rugby), tug- of- war and race was held on the muddy field.

It was held in three categories: for those aged below 12, for those aged between 12 and 18 and a race open to all.

Former MLA Krishna Palemar inaugurated the event in the presence of Kadri Jogi mutt seer Sandhyanatha swamiji.
Prior to the inauguration the seer performed pooja.
