M’lore: Dr APJ Abdul Kalam to Inaugurate Father Muller Oncology Centre on Dec 9

Mangalore, Dec 5: "It was a dream envisioned in the year 2005 during the centenary celebrations of Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI). Now, it is being realized", said Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director of FMCI, here on Wednesday, December 5, in the FMCI council auditorium.
He was addressing a press conference on the back drop of the inaugural of Father Muller Oncology Centre, scheduled to be held on Sunday, December 9, at 11- 00 a m by former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
The Oncology Centre is being set up at an approximate cost of Rs 10 crores. The facility will be equipped with a linear accelerator, which will be attached to the CT scan and open MRI for accurate location of the tumor. It will also have the very sophisticated 'Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy' (IMRT) and floor based Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) which is the first to be installed in India.
Replying to the queries of media persons, Dr Suresh Rao, head, Father Muller Oncology Centre said that the advanced technology available at the Centre can specifically target the tumor with higher dose and spare the normal tissue. It also reduces the side effects to the minimum by using all the modalities with less aggression.
Treatment at the Oncology Centre would range between Rs 8 thousand to Rs 16 thousand depending on the number of sittings and the affected space to be treated.
FMMCH has been doing the charitable work since its inception. It has established a Cancer Fund and the amount received are being utilized as subsidy to give concession to deserving patients in their treatment.
The inaugural ceremony of the Oncology Centre will be held at the Father Muller Stadium. Besides, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, union minister of state for labour and employment, Oscar Fernandes and chairman of FMCI and Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza will grace the occasion.
