Udupi, Sep 6: Coastal guards rescued 7 fishermen who were trapped on a rock mid-sea after their boat hit a rock. The incident took place near St Mary’s Island in Malpe near here.
As per details, a fishing boat named Gopisagara was on its way back after 8 days in the sea on the night of Monday, September 5. While the boat was nearing the coast, it hit a rock and the fishermen had to jump out from the boat to save themselves. Then they safely swam to a nearby rock.
They could not send any message to the coast and were stranded on the rock until they were spotted by fishermen in another boat belonging to Keshav Kunder on the morning of Tuesday, September 6. But the 7 persons could not be rescued by these fishermen as their big boat could not enter near the rock. They informed the coastal guards about it.
The coastal guards went there with the help of locals in small boats and brought the 7 stranded fishermen back to the shore safely.
Panduranga, Vasudeva, Vasu Naik, Subbayya, Jagadish Bhat, Santosh and Manjunath are the fishermen rescued. They have been now taken to district hospital for treatment.
The boat worth Rs 40 lac has been completely destroyed. Fish worth Rs 7 lac was lost due to the accident.
District in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj visited the hospital where the rescued fishermen are being treated.
Deputy commissioner, district superintendent of police and coastal guards superintendent of police also visited the hospital.
