Karnataka releases Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, protests intensify

Bengaluru, Sep 7 (PTI) : Amid protests, Karnataka has started releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu complying with the Supreme Court directive asking it to release 15,000 cusecs per day to the neighbouring state for ten days.

"Karnataka has started releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu to obey the Supreme Court directive asking the state government to release 15,000 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu for ten days," a state water resources ministry official told PTI here.

He said the state started releasing water from midnight yesterday. Meanwhile, protesters have intensified their agitation in Mandya and other parts of the state blocking several roads and forcing schools and colleges to shut down. Complying with the Supreme Court direction, the state government yesterday decided to release water despite "severe hardships."

The court order directed an immediated backlash with agitated farmers and activists belonging to pro-Kannada outfits blocking the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway.

Mandya

Mandya district, the nucleus of Cauvery politics, saw a bandh yesterday with protesters holding road blockades and dharnas at several places, as hundreds of security personnel -- including central forces -- were deployed in the Cauvery belt to maintain law and order.

"Despite severe hardships faced by the government of Karnataka, the state will release water as directed by the Supreme Court," Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had told reporters after nearly a three-hour long all-party meeting convened by him here, yesterday.

Siddaramaiah had also said government would approach the Supreme Court with a modification petition, explaining its difficulties in implementing its order.

Noting that the 'samba' crops in Tamil Nadu would be adversely affected, an apex court bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra and U U Lalit directed Karnataka to ensure supply of water to Tamil Nadu.

In principle people must share the Precious resource equally. Question is if the statistics presented by both governments correct? In this case TN has presented the statistics in a better way.

Why blame Siddu Govt blame Supreme court. The decision is made and ordered by SC. The govt can support the people and ask the SC to revised its decision but it will be too late. Why cant TN doing rain harvesting? What in return Karnataka is getting? Tamilian migration? Like MRPL,thermal power plants whole wealth is stolen by other states in the name of development and left the place in stench without employment. The center become gutter.

Its easy from our part to blame Siddu or Modi, but its always the lower riparian riparian state which has an edge. and its supreme court order no matter how hard our case is TN always has an edge. we have the best lawyer Fali Nariman but atlast its all compromise, any party comes to power be it congress, jds or BJP cauvery problem is not going to solve nor can modi or rahul.Lets not politicise this issue lets think as matured educated individuals.

    Dear mangalorean,
Dont worry about cauvery issue. The govt who neglected in the netravathi case and turned its flow towards chikkaballapur near bangalore will handle the issue by providing the water of netravathi to bangalore people. we mangaloreans will become comedy people if we support the bandh decided on 9th sept/

Very Very Bad Decision . tamildanu having 4 times more water resources then karnataka. Tamilnadu government is having more tax benefit than karnataka Maney Dams of british Era kept as it is without any maintenance. All state revenue is going in the pockets of karunanidi family pockets and jayalalita followers pockets.
without doing any development they want water from karnataka and kerala .

very bad decision of supreme court

The Siddu Govt lacks conviction. It has let down the expectations & aspirations of the Ktaka people big time. Yettinahole and CAuvery. Besides the Bhagyas, Jayanthis , Nepotism & Sleeping, Siddu will go down in history as one of the worst CMs we ever had.

    Mr Nithin,

I am part of the agricultural study team assessing the situation in kolar and chikaballapur district. do you know how the people are suffering there? go to kolar and do a background check.
its pity that they are receiving recycled BWSSB water from the bangalore drains, why because yettinahole project is not uted.go to kolar and assess the ground reality how many people are drinking contaminated water which is filled with Lead. Its lucky and you are blessed that you are staying in one of the most finest districts of karnatak.

you mean to say let the people of Dakshina Kannada die for the sake of Kolar and Chikkballapur????

If you are doing agriculture study then you should have proposed rain water harvesting in these areas or you should have told government to convert the sea water into drinking water and then supply to kolar and other places.

Pumping water from the river source of Nethravati is not the solution, you will be creating ecological imbalance by cutting trees in Western ghats to set the 10feet pipes

We have to support our people.Giving water to TN will cause ulta problem for us only.Any scarcity in cauvery could lead to implementation of Yettinahole also.So we must oppose it.SC is unfair.Panel of judges should rethink about their decision.
