Hassan, Sep 8: Konkani language congregation which had gone to the Church of Divine Mercy in Sakleshpur of Hassan district in Chikkamagluru diocese to celebrate the birthday of Mother Mary (Nativity feast) on Thursday, September 8 was shocked to know that the priest of the scheduled Konkani mass was missing.

A complaint to the police station revealed that the bishop forced the priest not to go to the church for festive mass allegedly due to language dispute.

The year long friction between Catholic families of Konkani and Kannada languages in the church was at its peak on the festive day.

More than 300 Catholic families come to the church for prayer and adoration. The mother tongue of 80% of the 300 to 350 catholic families here is said to be Konkani. The parishioners use both languages as medium of prayer here. The problem was intensified as the bishop under whose jurisdiction the church comes is a Kannadiga.

Bishop in his directives has ordered that the prayers be held only in Kannada from last one year. However as Konkani is the mother tongue of most of the Catholic families, they have been urging that services to be held in Konkani too.

Bishop Dr Anthony Swamyis determined to hold church services only in Kannada, sources said. The Konkani speaking Catholics have been offering a mass in Konkani while two other masses were in Kannada during the last six months.

For the Nativity feast, nearly 800 Konkani speaking devotees who came to the Church on Thursday were disappointed by the absence of priest Fr Charles Pereira. The devotees then went to Sakleshpur police station to lodge a complaint.

The police informed the complainants that the priest has registered a complaint seeking protection from vested interests.

The priest when contacted said that the bishop called him to Chikkamagluru and urged not to go to the church on the day of the feast. The Konkani speaking Catholics who condemned it, went to the Church and offered prayers in Konkani.

Meanwhile some Kannada speaking devotees who saw the gathering called Navakarnataka organizers and tried to assault Konkani speaking congregation alleging that the Konkani speakers were indulging in anti Kannada activities. The organizers went back when the reality was explained to them.

The police have diluted the situation.

The Konkani speaking devotees condemned and protested the attempted assault by Kannada speaking Catholics calling Navakarnataka organizers and preventing celebrations of Harvest festival. They event locked the church.

    Sad news is that we didn't not celebrate out our mother Mary's feast on 8th September...
    Y....?
    Because🤔 the bishop of Chikmanglur is against the konkani people and acting as dictator of the diocese.. He tells in such a way that he will never allow for a konkani mass anywhere in Chikmanglur diocese... Al though there are 95% konkani speaking people in sakleshpur church we are not getting mass because of bishop and some kannadiga priest and 3_4 kannadiga families... Even the priest is feared because the kannadiga people coming to church and threatened priest in slang languages... Guy's it's the time to react because we are not against kannada mass we are only asking for a konkani mass to keep up our culture and traditional to the future....
    And if it is start let it reaches the bishop, priest and the kannadiga who r against konkani mass.... Because we will never ever step back....

    We,people of Sakleshpur(Roman catholics) are very sad to tell that we didn't celebrate the holy feast mass in our church. It is a family feast which should be celebrate in the church as well as In everyone's house as a holy family. Holy family indicates unity and purity but there is lack of unity in our church because of kannada and konkani. We konkani people are not against kannada at all, but we are asking for a mass in konkani language along with the mass in kannada. When Hindu and Muslim people celebrate the mass In Sanskrit and Urdu, why can't we celebrate the mass in konkani. Don't we have the right? When 97% of the people are of konkani why is that the priest and bishop are not allowing us to celebrate the mass in konkani?

    bcz of few people,bishop and some priest we couldn't celebrate our mothers b'day.few kannada people have abused father in a bad language and threatened him not to give Konkani mass bcz of that father left nearly 800 people and our church 7 on the feast day.we are not opposing kannada mass,we want it at the same time we want Konkani mass too in order to take over our culture and tradition.

Or u want history to repeat again like father K.V JAMES.you guys need a big lesson of life.Atleast now it's the time for you to under stand what you guys have Done n turn towards the Jesus.We konkani Catholics have forgiven you in the past doesn't mean u keep repeating your crap every time.it's our right to ask for konkani mass and we are not against Kannada mamas.if this continues this might cause very bad consequences on ur children's life.     Dear sir/madam, happy to see all supporting. I heartily thank each & everyone.

    Here we 98% of families are together supporting both Konkani & Kannada masses. And rest of them want only Kannada mass in parish. Bcoz of them whole parish is in trouble & couldn't celebrate nativity feast. And even they are troubling in many ways spreading violence to diseparate our unity.
    But we believe in peace so no one can harm us in any way. After all whatever it may be we need Konkani masses. For this we are ready to face anything.

    our church is 74 years old Our Lady Of Mercy Church
    Before 15-18 year's till that time we had konkani mass here.. Even our grand pa says we had Tulu mass on Thursdays... @present situations here the no of families comes under this Parish are 95% Konkani Christians Originated From Coastal... Now we are struggling to get a konkani mass of our language due to the opposition of The bishop of Chikmanglur and because of the Kannada priests of this diocese... Even konkani priests are ruled by this bishop on his own ways in this particular diocese..
    The konkani mass was going on every Sunday's when the same bishop gave permission before 3 months after all our struggle ...

    When there is a Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam mass in most of the churches in Bangalore, & that too every Sunday, no one raises their voice or finger. Fact is most of the fathers in bangalore are tamilian & when we meet the fathers they actually start the conversation in Tamil. Only when we say we dont understand tamil, they start conversing in Kannada or English. But when a konkani mass is held once in a year every one's pride is pricked & protest, then politicians, Pro Kannada groups are involved & the whole atmosphere is spoilt. A Classic case of how politics or language politics if involved is Fr. Chasara & the closure of St. Paul The Hermit church.

    Over 20 years ago there was conflict between Kannadiga and Tamilian Catholics. Later there seem to be a compromise under which Telugu and Malayalam languages were also accommodated. Now they have shifted their animosity towards the Konkani congregation who seem to be a soft target. While the Kannadigas can accommodate those outsiders why can’t they adjust with people of their own state? It’s high time that Karnataka should be made a multi-lingual state with Kannada as the official language. Unlike our neighbouring states where their respective languages are spoken by over 90% of the population, Kannada is spoken by less than 65% in the State. Also since the issue was taken to the court, the Govt. must officially recognize Konkani, Tulu, Beary and Kodavu as additional languages of the state so that no worshiper is deprived of his right to worship in his language.

    There should be Tulu and Konkani ekikaran. The loose attitude of Tuluvas and Konkanis is the reason for these useless Kannada organizations to dominate on us. First of all there is no use studying Kannada. You wont get a job of an office boy.
    While Tulu Nadu is torn apart in Kerala & Karnataka Konkani rastir is torn appart in Karnataka, Goa & Maharastr. Why has the ekikaran of our people not taken place? Why is that we do not get education in our mother tongue Konkani? Why should I study in kannada which is not my mother tongue and neither do I have any use studying this language? Why cannot we people from coastal regions think on these lines? We must reject this tribal Kannada language. As long as we bow, people will try to dominate us.

    Kannada Christians are more likely of Telugu and Tamil Dalit Christians who’re fighting against Goan, Malayali and serian xtians but they are putting Kannada tags for their survival. Many original Kannada speaking people do not need Christianity at all. I’ve seen one pastor in Badravathi and shivamoga churches who are originally Telugu guys.

    Dr. Sharath, You are a Tuluva and not a kannadiga. Kannadigas have problems with all other languages, They have problems with tamil, telugu, marati, konkani tulu and malyalam. Being in Bangalore you should know this. Who is dividing the society on the basis of language, are the kannadigas. For your info, Konkanis are not only from Goa but are there in many other areas. Sindhudurg in Maharastra are Konkanis, Karvar district is a Konkani district. These fraudulent kannadigas through deception did not allow Tulu Nadu rajya, Konkani rastir and Kodava rajya to come about. By the by bunts are from Kerala. Will you go back to Kerala? Kannadigas are intolerant and anti non -kannadigas.

    I agree that konkani speaking people understand kannada. But when 80% of the people are KONKANI speaking, and there is another mass in kannada for the rest of 20% people, what is the problem in offering a mass in konkani?
    Not only in sakleshpur but in every other parish of ckm, bishop is opposing masses in konkani even if there are two masses on sundays and majority of the people are konkani speaking??

    I condemn what the Bishop has done Sakleshpur is a Region where mostly Kannada is spoken,and Konkani speaking People too understand kannada.why should not hold the mass Liturgie in kannada?God understands both.So no language Problem or discussion and Problems later.If kannada speaking People want in Konkani ,celebrate it later either seperate or private in a hall gathering.Noone can prevent it.why so much Dispute? Is it not enough what in Mysore or Bangalore happend?Do we want more Problems?Think dear Rev.Bishop,instead of Police why didnt you call church members and asked them?Now priest is inbetween.God help us.In such Situation we Need not celebrate a feast.Mother Mary please excuse us.we sinners in this world are worried about our language ,but not your worship.

    I have a few suggestions:

    1. No Bishop should be appointed before age 65.

    2. Bishops should be transferred to other dioceses after a term.

    3. Not to appointed based on 'quota'.

    4. Wearing mitres should be discontinued.

    Shame on the Bishop, not allowing the services to be held in two different languages when the celebrant is available in both languages! He should take the positive example of our parish priest in Sharjah, we have masses/services in at least 7 language to cater to people of different languages and denominations under one roof. He makes efforts to bring outstation celebrants if not available locally. This makes the common make take part in the liturgy effectively in his/her mother tongue which he/she could relate easily. Please have harmony and do not create hatred in the prayer place.

    I think secular leadership is missing in our churches. Regional church leaders are promoting language chauvinism.One should remember church is for all faithful. It is wrong on the part of Chickmaglur bishop to prevent Konkani service when there is sizable Konkani churchgoers. But similar attitude can be seen in local dioceses there is apathy from Konkani speaking majority to have services in Kannada and Malyalam as there are enough floating and resident population of those here in Mangalore. The hypocrisy is that there are good number of English services but Kannada and Malayalam is suppressed by Konkani cartels

    The mass should have held in Kannada as konkanin speaking christians read and write Kannada too. This should have discussed in details in Parish Council meeting. Have they done this, this issue would have sorted out very peacefully.

    Mr. D'cunha. We are aware that Konkani people of this region can read and write in Kannada. However, India is a democratic country and people have the right to have their religious service in a language/pattern of their choice. This act is purely insensitive and disrespectful. We are not telling them to have konkani as a medium in school or promote konkani in this region. Could you or anyone tell us in what way a konkani mass is going to offend Kannadigas. Is it going to mock kannada in any way? Neither we are forcing them to listen to our konkani mass. They can have their mass in kannada and we can have our mass in Konkani. You may think why should we stick to our language, just for a moment think about the nostalgic moments that you have had since childhood attending Monti fest. Monti fest is our tradition, its our harvest festival. Our ancestors celebrated it to give thanks during the hardships that we faced during tippu's regime. Certain things are best enjoyed in its traditional way.

    The Church authorities seems to have believed in divide & rule policy. Whatever the issue they need to settle it before not dividing people.     When you can have straight access to GOD directly, why do you need an 'agent' called Priest?
    People can go to place of worship (or even at home) and pray Lord for health , peace and prosperity silently like the system followed in Lotus temple at Delhi. Correct me if I am wrong, please!!

    Konkani community has many lawyers. A law suite should be filed against those bishops and priests who rob people of their fundamental rights. In Bangalore a case was filed against the Bangalore Bishop for not directing the churches to perform mass in Konkani. Now the court has ordered all the churches to start masses in Konkani. Legal recourse seems to be the only way forward.

    Chikmagalur diocese Bishop must rethink his strategy to have masses in kannada & konkani respectively in all parishes across Chikmagalur. otherwise these type of incidents keep continue to grow in the near future.

    Pls don't try to divide ppl on language basis here.500 years no body has heard of konkani language in coastal region.If you don't want kannada then why you people use kannada script for your day to day business.If you find studying kannada no use means you can go back and settle in Goa at any time.

    but in christians not lke this Christian involvement is there 1 hour mass, praying singing and some time answering wat priest says ,it is easy to reply when you understand it and how you are taught some of the prayers and singings.

    Mass should be conducted in both the languages simultaneously will all the KANNADA & KONKANI Speaking people together with proper sitting arrangements for all coming to celebrate the mass.

    The bishop & priest should use commonsense, instead of dividing people in the name of language they can bring them together when prayers are done in both languages used together simultaneously.

    hassan is in kannada heartland. Kannada christians of Hassan will know Kannada but not konkani. Konkani christians living in hassan will know kannada. mass in kannada should be acceptable to both.

    konkani issue being raised on a very holy day causes konkani christians to lose any sympathy for konkani language.

    Kannadigas are linguistic. They are intolerant of non- kannada languages. First of all sakleshpur is Tulunadu where Tulu and Konakani are the real day today languages. Why isn't there Konkani ekikarana and Tulu ekikarana?

    It is a fact that our priests and in this case, the bishop himself have all along been indulging in politics trying to take sides, trying to divide the faithful on various issues, language being one of them. Why the hell did this bishop mind his business and not create a rift?
    It appears that these priests and bishop feel insecure because people dont care for them any more and dont give them importance any more. The only way they can feel important is by creating such issues or by other means like harassing people when they approach for marriages, christening etc. asking them to go through various rituals. Such problems were not there 20-30 years back when priests used to be very friendly with families and we Catholics used to give a lot of importance to priests.

    I can not understand why these so called Kannada Catholics so much fanatic in their language rather than spirituality
    Seen their tantrum in Bangalore and Mysore cities, now Chickmagaluru district, The real Christians don't fight for languages, Devotees can offer prayers in their own mother tongue which they understand easily and feel closeness with God,
    Unlike Konkani catholics these Kannada Catholics were always seen as very narrow minded and linguistic fanatics,
    In coastal districts, both Mangalore and Udupi although majoritians are Konkanis, they allowed Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada liturgies in regular konkani churches for visitors, students, None of the Konkanis bothering or creating any type of madness or opposing it. Why these people give bad name to our religion?

    Let it be known, there is scriptural reference that, God himself divided the people's language.
    Hon. High Court directed, that Mass be conducted in people's languages.
    Spiritual heads should be accommodating and unifying force, shouldn't be divisive.
    In this matter, I appreciate Maharastrians, there are masses in Konkani, may be more than Marathi and no objection from any corner!

Once someone becomes a Christian ,from that moment he or she is original.But as for the language and culture...well every individual carries some attributes from his past generations.That is why we can see the difference in the level s of tolerance between the two groups,although there are exceptions.
