Mangalore, Dec 14: NCC is not just the matter of getting on to grounds and doing parade, instead it is an opportunity given to cadets to develop all round personality, said Col DRR Reddy, group commandant, while speaking to selected media persons at the Combined Annual Training camp for all the wings of army held at KPT (Karnataka Polytechnics) grounds.
Briefing the media persons about the aims of NCC (National Cadet Corps), he said one should join NCC in order to develop qualities of character, courage, comradeship, discipline, leadership, secular outlook, spirit of adventure and the ideals of selfless service.
Ruling out the apprehension that medical students and engineering students are reluctant to join NCC camps, he said an NCC wing has been set up in NITTE education trust and as for as Mangalore is concerned students are keen to join wings, in fact more NCC wings would be set up in the near future, but this process has been delayed because of certain reasons like shortage of human resource and financial constraints.
Addressing media persons, the group commandant said that extending the training to post graduation is a political issue. The prime concern is to an extent shifted, now the NCC women cadets are the prime focus. It has been intended to achieve the increase of 33% against the existing 18% of women NCC cadets.
It had been apprehended that the semester system would have an adverse impact on NSS attendance, but fortunately nothing of the sort happened. On the contrary young population is more eager to join the wings. This has set an example for all to follow, he sounded confident.
It is no more surprising to say notwithstanding the non-availability of certain essentials like rock climbing, response to NCC is comparatively better and encouraging at rural sides. Students are taking part in NCC activities, this shows their zest to serve the country, he added.
Moreover "C" certificate holders will be exempted from written exams in certain prestigious exams such as Short Selection Commission. Thus NCC is not just an add on course that a student can do simultaneously with their graduation studies, Lt Col B Suresh Kumar, commanding officer of 18 Karnataka NCC Battalion added.
Totally 600 NCC cadets from 13 colleges and 10 schools, under four distant divisions Junior Division, Junior Wing, Senior Division and Senior Wing, have taken part in the camp. The camp was organized by 18 Karnataka battalion.
