Chitradurga, Sep 13: The fact that an attempt to bury an eight-year-old boy alive was made at Kanchipura in Hosadurga taluk in the district came into the open on Sunday September 12.
Jyothi, daughter of Nagamma fro Doddakarpuradahatti village had been married to Srinivas from Shivani Station village. Srinivas is a coolie by profession and his addiction to liquor had devastated the family.
Jyothi's son, Abhilash (8) was born with certain handicap and he could not move around. Because of his condition, Abhilash grew up with maternal grandmother, Nagamma. With the help of villagers, Nagamma was getting monthly pension of Rs 500 for which specially abled children are eligible.
On Sunday, Jyothi arrived at the house of her mother and demanded that pension received in her son's name should be handed over to her. When Nagamma refused, she took her son away, visited a local relative, and after spending sometime there, went away with her son. Everyone thought she had taken her son back to her home.
In the evening, a shepherd grazing some sheep in barren field heard wailing sound which he felt belonged to a child. He went closer and found the stretched hand of a child inside a pit. He raced to Kachipura at around 7.30 pm that day and conveyed information to villagers. The villagers went there and brought out the boy who was buried under stones alive. He was admitted into a government hospital nearby from where he was taken to district hospital. On Monday morning, the boy was referred to CJ hospital Davanagere for advanced care. He is learnt to be out of danger.
Deputy director of women and child welfare department,Parameshwarappa, said that the department will meet expenses for treatment and rehabilitation of the boy and that if she so wants, the boy will be given to the care of his grandmother.
Abhilash's mother, Jyothi, was arrested from Hosadurga Road by police of Srirampur station on Monday night. She confessed to have committed this crime. District superintendent of police, M N Anuchet, said that Jyothi explained that being specially abled, she felt it would be difficult to raise her son.
