Mangaluru, Sep 13: Police in city on Tuesday, September 13, raided two places in relation to illegal SIM cards used by two undertrials.
Police in the leadership of assistant police commissioner (ACP) Udaya Naik and Bunder police inspector Shantharam raided a shop named Crown on Balmatta Road between Jyothi and Milagres and took away necessary documents for investigations. Crown are distributors for Tata Dokomo SIM cards.
A raid was also conducted at Cameo Company based in Urwa who do the outsourcing work of processing documents for SIM cards.
Illegal SIM cards used by undertrials
Shivaprasad, an accused in Vinayaka Baliga murder case, was using a SIM card which belonged to a person named Kareem. Kareem had died in May 2015. But the SIM card was issued in October 2015.
Rizwan, an accused in Charan murder case, was using a SIM card in the name of Cleven Philip (28) from Farangipet. As per police, Cleven did not even know about it. His documents were used by a person named Safwan to procure the SIM.
It is not yet known as to what exact roles the above named companies played in the illegal SIM card cases. It is also not known how many such cards are in circulation at present and how many of them were used by undertrails.
29 SIM cards were seized from district prison last week during a raid.
ACP Udaya Naik said that these fake SIM cards were used for illegal activities.
