Mangalore, Dec 18: A Mumbai-based recruiting firm for Gulf job aspirants held its recruitment drive at Hotel Taj Manjarun in the city, in  which the gathering of hundreds of job-seekers went berserk on Tuesday December 18.

‘Sky Ship International Pvt Ltd’ , located at Memonwada Road, Mumbai, had scheduled the recruitment drive in the cities across south India from October 2007.  They were representing M/s Al Bandar International House for Trading Co, Saudi Arabia, recruiting for various positions.

The said firm had arranged interviews for skilled workers from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Philippines and Nepal with their final destination in the cities of South India, namely, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mangalore, Trichy and Chennai scheduled till Wednesday December 19.  Accordingly, the interviews were to be held on Tuesday December 18, from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm.

However, following a commotion caused by hundreds of Gulf job-seekers, the recruiters vacated their rooms by 10.00 am.  It was significant that a few job seekers from Cochin had also arrived in the city, since they were denied interview by the recruiters.  Although the recruiters had not demanded any money from the job-seekers, the way they hushed up things by compelling the hotel staff to convey false information that they had vacated the hotel accommodation resulted in commotion and chaos.

So far it is not known whether they are into duping the Gulf job-seekers by arranging the interviews in faraway cities in south India.  But it is a caution for the Gulf job aspirants to be vigilant on the credentials of recruiting firms in the wake of several similar cases reported across the country.

Mr. Edwin D'Souza Kamaths concern on Mangalore real estate prices is a concern for many. The obscene prices quoted by both developers and dealers are unimaginable. All prices have been hyped up because of SEZs. Leaving aside unrealistic prices buyers are made to pay under the table and there is no tranparency.

There are no regulatory bodies in this regard. Moreover the people who are overseas pay these obscene prices even under the table and hold properties for speculation driving the prices even higher. Perhaps the locals see this and jump in the band wagon to go to Gulf.

India the land of incredible talents, far too long has caterred the world with people. And these people have been paid poorly as compared to westerners and other nationalities. Argument-western lifesyles have higher standard of living. Perhaps true but more importantly Indian have been considered as "no class" people. While most establshments in the Gulf have run by "white top bosses" under the flagship of local Arabs.

Far too long our people have been used, abused, underpaid, made to work off their butts yet have been paid no benefits and kicked out of employment at the whim of these unscrupulous employers western and eastern.

Partly, the blame goes to Indian government, in the greed of earning forein exchange our people have been allowed to be slaved. Why Employers pay low wages and no benefits to Indians because Indian accept them. One simple resaon I can cite is when exchanged to Indian Rupees, for many, this seems to be fabulous sum and that of course if not spent in the host country living in crowded shanty places or in tents.

For Indians, going abroad, has become a status symbol and today moving from Gulf to the west has elevated their stature even farther despite the harsh realities where educated drive taxies because their education has been considered not at par with host countires or do janitorial jobs- most of them if not all.

This way, the whole world has used Indians as "coolie" labour. And even today the worlds goliaths of commerce cry to come to India not only to use collie labour to produce goods but to sell the goods to them because of the enormous buying power(population). We Indians need to think straight, give up our greed of foreign lands and earn and spend right here and refuse to be the slaves in terms of poor pay and benefits.

We need to learn to earn more and stay no more as underpaid around the world. Today Indian educated nurses have been sought around the world particulary the west where the population is aging and there are no human resources to take care of them. Of course these may been paid under local laws but are subjected to abuse in terms of working conditions.

Our government must do more to stop the brain drain not only the skilled but the unskilled as well. But above all we must give up the notion that going abroad far better than staying in India. This is the other reason why we ourselves offer for poor pay and treatment. Our weakness has become somebodys strenght.

We must take pride in who we are and have a committment to do better right in India and the world will come to us with respect and better treatment not only from outsiders but from our own unscrupulous recruiters.

It seems the craze for gulf not gone in India especially in southern part though the sufferings of their fellow citizens in the gulf well published through various media at home and abroad. The gulf is not a land of opportinities any more and it has become more expensive place to live. In fact now I think there is reverse trend going on.

Recently due to UAE amensty period the workers who left on mercy openly said that they do not want to come back here. Therefore I urge my country men job seekers stay back and work more harder in whatever job you are in.

Nelson’s observation is good. But after reaching heaven from there one can see the world and may think why the people on earth are making such a big noise to go to heaven. People reach Gulf and some of them become rich but not all.

It’s quite normal many are trying to go to Gulf but only few succeed. I was in Aircraft with my wife in Dubai airport a few years ago when I saw few cleaners entering the Aircraft. I saw most of them were Keralites and a few were other nationalities. In rulers’ palaces I saw Keralites, Mangaloreans and many other nationalities as a mix.

I too have lived in Gulf with my family and seen miseries around. Have tried to help few cases within my capacity. Everyone has to make attempts to live a healthy life. Some are fortunate to get what they want but others have to struggle. This is our life. Nothing comes easily. Everyone has to make honest attempts until success comes their way.

In Mumbai I have seen the masons and laborers sitting near the train stations waiting for someone to pick them up for jobs. I have picked up a few when I needed some help. I don’t know what others are doing for their livelihood.

Years ago, I was called for a final interview by a foreign firm at the agent's office in Bombay. When I reached the office, I saw about 200 job seekers pushing and jostling and the entire personnel at the agency were involved in controlling these people.

One of the staff saw me and beckoned me to come in and sit in the office. At that moment, I asked them for what jobs these people had come for. I was told they were carpenters and masons and would be earning around SR 600 or BD 60. I was surprised, because a good carpenter or mason earns a good amount in Bombay itself and if he acts as a Mistry, i.e. Supervisor or Foreman and takes up jobs here and there, he will be employing many people at various projects and flitting around in a Royal Enfield to see the progress of the work and give instructions to the staff. He would be earning quite a bit of dough.

If one is educated or a skilled worker today, he earns a good amount in major cities of India and also has the opportunities to do overtime, part-time or take private jobs. I fail to understand why youngsters wants to come to Gulf, as if there is gold here. Just imagine the hardships one has to undergo.
