Bantwal, Sep 25: In a rare incident, a pregnant woman in between her labour pain successfully delivered a baby girl in the ambulance with assistance from Raksha Kavacha staff when the vehicle reached Farangipet on Friday, September 24.

‘108’ Raksha Kavacha ambulance was on its way to Mangaluru from Puttur blaring siren taking pregnant woman Susheela Mardhala in labour pains. Her husband too was accompanying her in the ambulance. When they reached Mani, the highway was blocked as a lorry had toppled on the road.

Shivanna, the driver of the ambulance drove the ambulance without losing hope though they were delayed by 40 minutes. While the ambulance was at Farangipet, the woman experienced labour pain again.

Staff nurse Manjunath did not panic. He asked the couple not to worry and instilled confidence in pregnant woman. Then he successfully conducted the delivery in few minutes.

Shivanna and Manjunath admitted the mother and the child to Lady Goshen hospital in Mangaluru later at night and returned home with joy.

It may be surprise to the new generation but my mother delivered 11 kids all at home without any medical help. Of course, the Midwife visited for a few deliveries. Childbirth is a natural process but medical staff is trained to help in case of any complications. All we can say thanks to Manjunath.

    NN,

Twenty-five, thirty years ago, delivery at home wasn't news. Those days the midwife had no clue whether the fetus is abnormal, twins/triplets are within or mother's health at risk due to anaemia. Nobody heard of cesarean section delivery, in many cases new mother died due to complications at birth. That is the reason many families have second mother because the first died. Do hear of such news now ? Rather, today we gherao hospitals if some death does happen beyond doctor's capacity.

You may be surprised that today an abnormal fetus can be detected in early stages of pregnancy which is medically advised to terminate for various reasons. Mother's health and adequate vitamins deficiency is kept under control. Beyond all, count of birth and infant mortality is monitored because this keeps the nation at some graph level in world comparison. Foremost, breastfeeding is encouraged, especially, the first milk that was being discarded in olden days thinking its equal to sap whereas it contains very vital nutrients for the infant's immunity.

Illegal births are taken over by the government to give them away on legal adoptions than giving way to infant trafficking, bought by wealthy childless couples.

Diseases like Polio, HIV are treated in early stages by being under medical care and immunisation against mumps, typhoid and other diseases is carried out.

I am sure you will not prefer your future generation to take birth at home as it happened with you.

Thankfully, the case is not breach or face-presenting. Nurses are trained to do normal deliveries but it does not go without saying thanks you to Manjunath.

    Good job gentleman...
