Mangaluru gets recognition as first city free of open defecation

Udupi  district among seven in state being declared open defecation-free

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 26: The city has emerged as the first ever city in the group of urban centres with population between five and ten lacs in the country to have been declared as open defecation free city. Among the cities with over ten lac population.

A team which conducted survey gave this information to the corporation officials here. The agency which conducted verification conveyed over phone that the city has emerged as the first city devoid of open defecation. The official information communication about this rare honour is expected to reach the city corporation council on Monday or Tuesday. In all likelihood, the letter giving this proud distinction to the city will be handed over on September 28, sources said.

On August 15, the city corporation had declared 16 wards as free of open defecation. Preparations are afoot to declare the remaining wards too as free from this ugly practice, it is gathered.

Chairperson of standing committee of city corporation council on health, Kavita Sanil, and city corporation commissioner, Muhammed Nazir, have confirmed the fact that the city is set to lead the country in the matter of hygiene, having won the spot of distinction.

Mysuru too has been declared the first city in the country that is free of open defecation in another category of population.

Congratulations on this honor. The same need to be sustained in the days to come. This would be a collective effort from the citizens of mangalore and this is possible if everybody gives their best for this cause.

Glad that our city has received this recognition, however, the team that conducted the survey clearly has't been to Sultan Batthery in the mornings. And probably many other places as other readers have pointed out. I guess no place in India can truly achieve this title. Also, why just fight against open defecation? Open urination is fine?

Its happening again! This should rank as one of the best gimmicks of 2016 played on the people of Mangalore. The accreditation agencies have anyway diluted their stringent standards by not doing their work thoroughly and just doling out certificates of recognition without properly assessing whether the award is worth giving away. Why go to places here and there? Just take a walk on the railway lines within Mangalore city early morning around 5a.m. and you will not be surprised by what you see. Humans and animals busy relieving themselves of their waste matter either on or beside the railway lines. I bet the inspectors never even bothered to see that aspect. If you go around doing an inspection after 8a.m., in only ed areas, obviously you wouldnt find anyone defecating at that late hour by normal standards because that would be an abnormal time for anyone to empty their bowels.

Were animals considered while giving ratings? What about those owners/ people who take their pets for morning walks and then dont clean up the mess they create in the surrounding. Still, Mangalore gets decorated with feathers which it certainly doesn't deserve at this point in time. First, start a movement to educate and to eliminate open defecation, ensure that every household/ neighbourhood has an attached toilet or sanitation facilities and then run after the agencies for certification. In this case, the certificate has already come before Mangalore can truly be d defecation free. The same argument holds good for declaring Mangalore as a clean city when it certainly is not. The agencies which award these certificates really need to do some introspection whether they are doing their job properly. Or is it some marketing ploy for real estate promotion? First, a clean city tag, then a smart city ion and now a defecation free city? How much are we going to fool the people? Are we Mangaloreans being taken for a royal ride?

Congrats....... Mangaluru and our people will never defecate at open grounds and footpaths. Compared to places like Mumbai, Kolkata. Hope our city will remain the same.

    Dear citizens,
Along with govt it is also every individual duty to keep city clean and green. instead of complaining try maintain cleanliness and also encourage others to follow. Govt should act strictly and fine those who are spitting and defecating. when people get a pinch then only they improve.

When it will come last number in towns of open defection. Bhatkal will be on last number in towns. Having spending crores and crores of rupees for more then 25 years on drainage still administration is not ready to shift the drainage and linked it to beautiful sharabi river which is heavily polluted. and is cause of concern for health on surrounding areas.
