Kundapur, Dec 20: The crescent moon had been sighted by some of the residents of Nagor village in Kundapur district on the 29th of Dhul qa'da. And accordingly, the calendar of the masjid had been altered. Once done the fishermen went back to their daily activities of deep sea fishing.

However, on their return they were surprised to see the calendar in the masjid showing 7 Dhul Hajj instead of 8. To clarify the matter they met the masjid's Muezzin and Imam and informed them about the sighting of the moon and that they could not inform them earlier as neither of them was present at the time of sighting.

They assumed that even others from their village might have sighted the crescent and did not think it necessary to inform others and went about their business as usual. On realizing that no one else did in fact sight the moon, they came forward to stand as witness for the same. When the news of sighting the moon appeared, a team of Ulamas from Gangoli and Kandaloor reached Nagor, and after being making necessary inquiries in this regard, the sighting of moon was confirmed in Nagor, Gangoli and Kundapur and Kandaloor.

Thus, an announcement was made to the effect that Eidul Azha will be celebrated on Thursday in the Udupi district as a whole. It may be noted that, earlier an announcement was made that the Eid will be celebrated on Friday.

According to the Qazi of Udupi, Moulana Ubaidullah Kandaloori he had sent a team which got necessary information from the people who sighted the moon and after getting complete satisfaction they confirmed the sighting and made the revised announcement of Eid. The citizens of Udupi, Mangalore, Ullal and Kerala state will celebrate Eid on Thursday December 20 whereas it will be celebrated on Friday December 21 in the rest of the country including Bhatkal, Honnavar, Ankola, Kumta and Karwar.
