Udupi, Dec 25: The freedom movement was akin to a relay race, where the responsibility of carrying on the movement was on the shoulders of several freedom fighters, said former minister Arun Shourie during the inaugural ceremony of 'Bharatayan' a depiction of India during the last 150 years.
The event, organized by the Centre for Humanities at Manipal University, consists of a series of seminars, film festivals, pictures and paintings portraying India's journey since the first war of independence in 1857 to 2007.
Shourie laid stress on the concepts of non-violence and Satyagraha and said that these methods are part of India's tradition.
Referring to elections, he pointed out that that 99.3 per cent of elected representatives in the country are elected by less than 50 per cent votes.
Among those present were pro-chancellor of Manipal University Dr H S Ballal, vice-chancellor Dr Raj P Warrier, registrar Dr H Vinod Bhat, head of the Centre for Humanities T Ranga Pai and others.
