Mangaluru, Oct 13: Mangalore Bar Association president SP Chengappa urged for a Circuit Bench of the Karnataka High Court to be set up in the city.
Addressing a press meet in city on Thursday October 13, Chengappa said, "A circuit bench of the Karnataka High Court must be set up in the city. More than 5,000 advocates are practicing at various courts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Kodagu districts. Bar associations of the coastal region and Malnad have extended their support in favour of a Circuit Bench of the Karnataka High Court to be set up here,”
“Everyone in the region must get access to judiciary. It is extremely expensive for advocates and their clients to travel all the way to Bengaluru for cases to be solved. The coastal region and Malnad have several pending cases at the High Court. Our city has good connectivity and is ideal for a Circuit Bench to be set up as the city is in proximity to all districts of the coast and Malnad areas. Our city has been placed on the Smart City list and a Circuit Bench is part of a smart city."
Chengappa also demanded an increase in the Karnataka Advocates Welfare Fund from Rs 1.5 lac to Rs 10 lac for an advocate who has been in service for 15 years irrespective of age bar when he or she has met with an accident. The stipend provided to practising advocates should be increased to Rs 3,000 every month and should be provided for three years.
Raghavendra H V secretary of MBA, Dinkar Shetty and others were present at the meet.
