Mangaluru, Oct 14: The new Kankanady town police station formed by bifurcating the existing Mangaluru (Kankanady) rural police station was inaugurated opposite Garodi temple near Pumpwell on Friday, 14 October.
The minister for forests and the district in-charge minister Ramanatha Rai inaugurated the police station by unveiling the name board of the station.
Speaking on the occasion, he said, “This police station was the need of the commissionerate. This police station will enable the city police to establish peace and order in the city effectively.”
“Police job is a unique job altogether. I wish that this police station will become people-friendly and maintain the diverse fabric of the city.”
MLA JR Lobo who lit the lamp informed that the police station was sanctioned during the tenure of the former home minister KJ George and thanked him for the same. “When I had requested for the additional police and traffic stations, George had provided the administrative approval and for the speedy completion of gazette notification and additional formalities, I must thank the city police commissioner Chandrasekar,” he said.
“This police station will help to maintain the smooth functioning of the Garodi temple festivities,” he added by thanking the present home minister Dr Parameshwar.
MLC and chief whip of legislative council Ivan D'souza said that Mangaluru rural police station at Maroli will be shifted soon to another building as the condition of the building has worsened.
“It is a challenge for the officers to work in Dakshina Kannada district. There is a need to increase the number of police personnel and police stations according to the growing population. This police station gives the 'homely' feeling,” he said.
Addressing the media persons, the commissioner said that the new building for Mangaluru rural police station will be constructed at private-public partnership in Vamanjoor premises. “If any private player comes forward, we will start the work within six months,” he added.
“The new police station will have one inspector, two PSIs, two ASIs, ten head constables, and 19 constables with a total of 44 personnel. Police inspector Ravi Naik along with the sub inspector Shankar Patali and other personnel deputed temporarily from other police stations will start working from tomorrow itself.”
“There is about 35-40 percent of shortage of police personnel in every station of the commissionerate. Within two months, the station will have full fledged staff with personnel deputed from various other police stations,” the commissioner said.
The police station building used to be the house of a person named Alexander Job D'souza and is 70 year old. The next building next to the house inside the premises used to be a handloom industry and this might be used as godown to store the goods.
The new police station covers the following areas- Padavu, Maroli,Alape, Kankanady, Jappinamogaru, Adamkudru, Bajal and Kannuru. ACP Shruthi will be the in-charge.
DCPs of the commissionerate Dr Sanjeev Patil, Shantharaju, ACPs Shruthi, Thilak Chandra, Udaya Nayak, DySP Valentine D'souza, corporators Praveenchandra Alva, Keshava Maroli, Asha D'silva, Sabitha Misquith and others were present on the occasion.
