Dharwad: Why government stays away from affairs of churches, mosques? - Raghaveshwara

Daijiworld Media Network - Dharwad (SP)

Dharwad, Oct 15: "Why has the government been targetting a single religion? Why does it not interfere with the affairs of mosques and churches? Why this step-motherly treatment?" questioned spiritual head of Ramachandrapur Math, Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati Swamiji.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday October 14, he pointed out that religious leaders like him are expected to run Maths and temples, not state administration. "We cannot become chief minister or take upon administration posts. We are not allowed to manage government departments. Likewise, everyone has to confine himself to what he or she is expected to do," he commented.

On the issue of threat to lay siege to Maths in the name of intellectuals and ideologies, he wanted to know what wrong Pejavar Swamiji has done. He pointed out that Pejavar Swamiji has embraced people from all fields and castes. He criticized the concerned for not instead trying to tackle several critical problems that are really bothering the country.

"The Mangala Gau Yatra being undertaken from November 8 onward will culminate at Mangaluru on January 26. As prelude to this, region-wise 'Gau Kinkara' Yatras, separate meetings involving children, farmers and Swamijis in district and taluk headquarters, will be conducted," he explained. He said that this Yatra is not aimed to serve interests of any particular Math, religion or political aim. This Yatra is purely meant for developing species of cows that are on the verge of extinction, and spreading awareness of their importance. All are free to take part in this programme, he added.

To a question, he stated that none of the institutions of health of the world have said that consumption of beef is good for health. "The beef of indigenous species of cows have more toxins as compared to foreign breeds, as per research conducted by veterinary university of Uttar Pradesh," he explained.

Yes , Shri Swamiji has a valid point. It is hard to understand that why the government is poking and troubling only temples and mattas and not other religious places like churches and mosques. How can the administration have different set of rules for different communities in our secular , democratic country???

@Shanker Mangalore, when govt.takes over the churches and Mosques, they have to look after all expenses of hospitals and the churches ,priests etc.I dont think they will be amused.Afterall temples were also early in the Hands of private ,mean maths.Only when the collection ther was not forwarded correctly to the govt.and many tried to hide Gold etc.govt wanted to have an eye on it.Of course Pope or Mosques head have to give the permission for it.Afterall churches are run mostly not on collection but their propertys allover.Because collections are less, and cant run all the cost by them.Churches have buildings and land given on rent ,and it supports the churches costs.but it is too less.

Churches & Mosques are non discriminatory to all its members. All muslims sit & eat together ir-respect of status. Have a clear legal title to properties and assets, Have clear established and practicing Leadership. Accounts are kept in order and Children and relatives of its Leaders will not get priority in Management and Administration. All the Christian Religious Leaders are well educated to serve and manage the Institutions and it's members and not just Degree holders.I am not allowed to worship my Krishna just like Brahmin or not allowed to eat with Brahmins in there homes and the temples. When the Lord Krishna brings equality and transparency among all my Hindu brothers and sisters the almighty and powerful God will order the Government stays away from affairs of Temples.

I was told on this very forum that just the money placed in 'Hundi' is collected by the government. If the government is ready to undertake uplift of Churches/Mosques and pay the salary of priests/Molvis as it happens in the temples' case, I am sure people will be ready for this change.

    Dear Mr Shankar,

I see the following two reasons why the Hindu temples are brought under government control:

    1. The number of Hindus compared to Christians and Muslims in much bigger. Hindus do not come under a certain jurisdiction and they may go to any temple and give money. Therefore, it is unlikely that the donors will question the financial regularities/irregularities. Whereas the Christians and Muslims comer under certain jurisdictions and the financial control is much more solid.

2.The amount of money coming to Hindu temples is higher than any degrees compared to Christians and Muslims. Imagine the money collected in Thirupathi temple and the like. Compared to such temples the money collected by us is minuscule. Do you remember the amount of gold collected in a Kerala temple recently. It was stored in several rooms.

    3. Now you may say we are getting foreign money. First of all according to some studies, the foreign money collected by some Hindu organizations is much bigger than Christians or Muslims. Besides, we submit the accounts to the Home ministry every year.

The above does not mean that I am supporting taking over the temple affairs. That is for the Hindus to work out and find a solution.

The funds are used for spiritual and social purposes. Mr Shankar, why should the government take over the financial administration for us. We contribute much more to build our churches, schools and other social activities. We are working for various causes and raise the funds. It is our hard earned money. Dear Father,
Do you think in a secular country, the law should treat all civilians and their places of faith equally?
As such, I have respect for all beliefs. My simple protest is against the government treating temples differently than mosques and churches. I do not have any doubts about the efficiency of churches in managing its funds when I say government should take over churches. Neither i have second thoughts about the charity by churches in the field of education and healthcare.
But I too claim, temples and Mutts too are efficient in managing their funds, charitable works are done by them too. So why not equal considerations by the government for Mosques, Temples and Churches?

Dear Swamiji, with due respect to you I want to say that, please think rationally before you make such comments. In Karnataka, the government is made up of 99% Hindus and hence it can be safely said that Hindus only are running the affairs of the temples!. If you look internationally, Churches in England are controlled by the government but not temples, Gurudwaras etc! Same is the case in Russia!!!. Both these countries governments are Christians (communists evolved from Christians! ). Similarly, Roman catholic churches are looked after by Vatican as there is no Christian dominated government in Karnataka.

why to answer... keep your mind clean, live and let live others. Give respect to human beings and not animals like cows. God created them for the utilization of the human beings.

    Dear Mr Nagesh Nayak,

I understand that you feel angry at the 'onslaught' of Hinduism: But I would like you to take also some positive elements which Christian religion has adapted form Hinduism:

    1. Aarati which once upon a time was banned in churches, is now a common practice. Bhajans, which were once upon a time were scoffed at, are part and parcel of our rituals. So also vipasana, pranayama, Yoga. I studied Yoga and Hinduism during my training to become a priest.

2.We read and quote Hindu scriptures during our religious services. There are many scholars of Hinduism in Christianity. I can name a few Bishops like the Catholic Bisop of Poona, Archbishop of Vasai and so on.

    3. We now celebrate Hindu festivals like Deepavali, Dusserah and find a connection between Hinduism and Christianity.

    4. Our educational institutions have the same dress code. There is no discrimination.

    5. We honour and respect Hindu Gurus and Swamijis. We invite them for our functions. The Christians in Udupi did ' Hore Kanike' for the Pejavar Swamiji program.

    6. We have now kept Indian names for our children. My nephews are Kiran, Prakash, Preetham, Santhosh.....

    7. We may differ in our beliefs. But we are same Indians. If I go to America, I will not search for a Christian, But I will search for an Indian.

We are one in spirit and heart. But there are some who are dividing us with external demands. They are neither true Hindus, Muslims or Christians.

    Father,
Respect your views, which are for sure will spread the message of harmony across.
But what is your take on Temples if high income being taken over by government and churches and mosques not coming under endowment act? Kindly do not say Churches and mosques do not have much income.

    Shankar,

Why put money in 'Hundi' despite knowing that the government takes it away ? Don't offer money don't grumble after doing it ? Tell you what - you are giving money as penance of your wrong deeds - else, there is no need to fill the 'Hundi' coffers.

If at all you want to do good work, do it yourself. Start a NGO, visit orphanages/old age home, hospitals and help the needy. Never a need will come to complain.

In Church/Mosques there is not collection box where devotees toss money. Whatever is collected is accounted for and taxes paid.

    Lydia,
Give one reason why the government should treat temples, churches and mosques differently?
I will not take the 'accounted and non accounted' argument. Even temples appoint eminent auditors for book keeping.

If government is interfering in your activities, then you fight with the government. Don't bring other religions into this controversy. You will lose respect if you vomit communal venom here. No need of matts or temples if you don't have humanity. Try to abolish caste system. All humans are equal and treat everyone equally is most important than having temples or matts.
