Bengaluru: Flyover project on, no more public consultations - chief minister

Bengaluru, Oct 18 (DHNS): Despite strong opposition from the citizens, the state government has decided to go ahead with the steel flyover project between Basaveshwara Circle and Hebbal flyover.

“The project has been already finalised and there will be no public consultation again. Those who are opposing the project should have raised objections when we sought public opinion.

About 73% of the feedback was in favour of the proposal. Even the court has directed the government to go-ahead with the project. We will issue the work order shortly,” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters on Monday. To a question on cost escalation from Rs 1,310 crore to Rs 1,791 crore in the span of two years, the chief minister cited the hike of Value Added Tax (VAT) on steel from 5% to 14%. “The project was first conceived in 2010 when the BJP was in power. It was born during their term and we are only taking it forward. BJP is jealous that we are doing it. Their opposition is politically motivated,” he noted.

Siddaramaiah made a mention that the steel flyover would be extended beyond Hebbal flyover. However, he did not specify details including the additional cost required for the extension or changes in the existing DPR. He reiterated that the government adopted a totally democratic and transparent process.

“The project is not done in a hurry. I had announced it in the 2014-15 budget. It has also received Cabinet approval and the project report is shared on the website. We floated a global tender and picked a contractor who quoted the least,” he said.

“Cutting of trees is inevitable in any developmental project. The government is not against the environment. Besides planting 60,000 saplings, we will try to shift and transplant full grown trees,” he said.

Projects which are considered as conduits of funds for personal gain shall not be subjected public discussion and cannot not be recalled. The same stand was adopted on Yettinahole River Diversion Scheme also, wherein even one sitting with the public is yet to be made.Strange are the ways democracy is dispensed in Karnataka. CM appears to be adamant and not answerable to people as it should have been in a true democracy. He is well aware that a single chance to become CM came like a lottery and next chance is very unlikely. More Hubbolt watches please.......!

A few sacrifices have to be made in order for urban development..after all it is for the welfare of the commuters.Bangalore North is getting congested and hence it is essential that a flyover is built in order to reduce traffic jams.

BJP is jealous because this was their pet project and they weren't able to implement it.

@ Shankar ji - Siddu govt has been far more efficient and productive than the previous corrupt bjp govt.

Siddus government is farmer and industry friendly and he has shown special concern for working and low income society with his welfare schemes.

bjp bhakts are least bothered about "Development" as this is not on bjp's agenda.

Mr Siddaramaiah, Can you please tell us when did you call people for public consultation? You will see the outcome of the results in the next elections if you go ahead with the steel flyover . When there are so many alternatives like improving the public transport, speeding up the 2nd Phase of metro etc you are still talking about cutting trees.Always remember , your may be getting old but there are young people who have a future and need to live.what is the development that you are talking about ? Go and see Chennai , even if the temperature is hot see the greenery that the government is trying to protect, see the clean and the neat roads without potholes . Jayalalitha has become peoples Chief minister but you are just the opposite .I had high regards for you but no more . I am sure like me many people in Bangalore will be against Congress. Today , Bangalore has turned to be a city of Dust and Dirt . Gardens have turned to Garbage dumps. Shame to this government .
