Chennai: NGT stays steel flyover project for four weeks

Chennai, Oct 28 (PTI): The southern bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) here today restrained the Bengaluru Development Authority from proceeding with the steel flyover project for four weeks.

Granting an interim stay on the flyover proposal that kicked up controversies, the NGT directed BDA not to carry on with the project work for four weeks and posted the mater to November 25 for further hearing.

The tribunal granted interim stay on petitions from Neelaiah, Citizen Action Forum and others. The petitions opposed the project on environmental grounds. The Rs 1,761 crore project of BDA is to construct a 6.72km long, six-lane steel flyover between Basaveshwara Circle and Hebbal to decongest traffic.

However, the project faced opposition as it allegedly involved felling of over 800 trees. Farmers too had opposed the project. Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium too had reportedly said that ramps may block the view of the sky.

As protests mounted against the project, Bengaluru Development Minister K J George had last week dismissed it as a "political gimmick" and it had taken the decision after consultations with experts and "due diligence".

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had defended the proposed construction of steel flyover calling it "totally transparent" and claimed the project was proposed in 2010 and announced in 2014-15 budget.

    1. Why is bjp building a Shivaji Statue off the coast of Bombay for a whopping Rs. 2,000 crores?

This is loot of tax payers money.

    2. Why is bjp building Sardar Statue in Gujarat (with the help of Chinese Steel)at a massive cost of Rs. 3,000 crores?

What happened to your patRIOTism and 'make in India'?

    3. This project was conceived by BJP... if so, then bjp came up with this plan to STEAL, isn't it?

Whatever BJP government of PM Modi does is termed 'development'.All other development from opposition parties is not in the interest of nation.

This is the same party kept the GST bill hanging for 10 years. When they came to power it become high priority.

Where is the national interest of BJP when they are in opposition?

Of Course 800 trees fall is matter of concern in a city where every of water counts these day.

They should come up with mass rapid transport system rather than flyover thousands of vehicles.

I dont know why the hell this people are opposing the steel bridge !! They are planting 60000 saplings for the least 800.
If the 800 trees is the case, then believe me Bangalore will remain as "Bendakalooru" ..losing the crown of an IT City.

Despite stay from Green Tribunal, the establishment will procure consumables for the flyover and stack it on road side in defiance as being done in the case of Yettinahole Diversion Project. If possible, they will ute the project in the cover of darkness. Such is the greed of the political establishment. CM do not want his known sources to dry up. Karnataka is the only major state in the country where this national party is in power. And everybody knows this the last chance for them to enjoy power as people can no more tolerate their arrogance and defiance. No senses and consensus even on issues of national importance.Few more mega projects will be conceived and implemented during the next two years. Now or never is the attitude......................
