Mangalore: Communal Tension All Around; Is It ‘Modi’ Model?

Mangalore, Jan 6: The undivided Dakshina Kannada district has been in the grip of communal tension for sometime. The clashes are occurring so often nowadays that communal strife has become almost a part and parcel of everyday life in coastal Karnataka. Some noted organizations are trying to depict it as attacks on a particular religion, but it is appreciable that police have been so far successful in bringing the situation under control.

If any clash takes place in and around Mangalore today, it never ends as a clash between two persons. Rather, it turns into a clash between two religions. The Sangh Parivar and Karnataka Forum for Dignity are claiming as saviors of Hinduism and Islam respectively. In between, the common man who does not want any riot is watching all this drama with fear.

The recent incidents which took place one after the other in the coastal area are clear indications that some forces are trying to disturb the peace here. But the people who experienced the nightmare of a curfew for weeks in October 2006 are not reacting to all these incidents. If they did, the region would have experienced another major communal violence in the last week of December 2007. The people of coastal area deserve applause for maintaining unity even though some elements have been trying their best to pollute the environment.

One can recall an incident where a group attacked the police at Kasaba Bengre on December 22 when police tried to stop illegal cow slaughtering. Immediately after this incident, a group of about 25 people entered into a prayer centre located at Kankanady and attacked the children who were engaged in dance and music practice. Three persons were injured in this incident. ADGP (law and order) Shanker Bidari paid a visit to the city immediately after these incidents and assured that strict action would be taken against the culprits.

The incidents have been recurring daily. A communal riot was reported from B C Road in connection to sale of illegal beef on December 28 and seven were injured in this incident. The police had to use the cane to bring the situation under control.

An incident of desecration of a mosque by throwing the severed head of pig was reported from Mulur near Kaup a few days ago. But the Muslim community has maintained peace there. Meanwhile, a person called Sunil D’Souza was severely beaten up at Savanur which is about 18 km away from Puttur, the place where he hails from. Sources say that there was no reason for this attack, other than to curtail the situation. Saheed, resident of Kayarga in Savanur, who came into the rescue of Sunil D’Souza, was also attacked by the miscreants on this occasion. But the police have not arrested any accused person so far. Many a time the government machinery also fails to take right action at the right time. That is why some sections of the society are feeling insecure now.

But the recent incidents in the coastal region have given rise to some questions. Two national political parties are trying their best to polarize the votes as minorities and Hindus, keeping in view the upcoming assembly election in the state. BJP has decided to propagate ‘Modi’ model in Karnataka. Is it really all a part of ‘Modi’ model and why is Congress, which claims itself to be the ‘savior’ of minorities not doing anything?

Militants from our neighbor countries in east and west are bleeding our Motherland using militant activities. HUJI and ISI are ably supported by 'sleeper cells' which are according to intelligence agencies 'extremely active' in some parts of coastal Karnataka.

You should realize that Gujarat has had no terrorist strikes or Communal violence in the last 5 years with India's best and all-round development state. I would prefer this model than travel on pot-holed roads from Bangalore-Mangalore risking mine and my family's life. This model is far better than Karnataka model where all parties be it Congress, JD, BJP have one point agenda to loot public money by forming govt. Please support good work done rather than writing these one-sided-articles.

This is a one-sided article. Why do you say it is Modi Model. The basis for the problem is ISI model of disrupting harmony everywhere and everyone who is not in line with hard-core religious bigotory. It is unfortunate that any one saying anything against this ISI inspired activites are considered as BJP and RSS - this is double-speak to say the least

BJP and the Sang Parivar is trying to create fear in the minds of the minorities and secular Hindus by using Money power, media power and muscle power. It is true BJP is trying to do the "MODI" model in Karnataka in order to polarize the votes. We have to unite and defeat their evil designs. Since there is president's rule in Karnatak, things are under control. Thank God. If BJP was ruling it would have been worse than Orissa.

Everyone knows how the Government of Orissa (BJD BJP combine) supported the Bajarang Dal thugs to burn the churches, attack the poor christians, destroy their properies and made thousands as homelss during the Christmas celebrations. Some Christians were killed by these thugs. This will be repeated in Karnataka, if BJP comes to power. Unfortunately, the secular votes in our state are divided among Congress, JDS, Socialist Party, BSP and the Left. In 2004, BJP had not secured more than 26% of the total votes, but came on top with 79 seats. All secular parties should join together and defeat BJP and Sang Parivar in the assembly elections. Surey it can be done. BJP will not get power in Karnataka. Let us hope for the best and pray for the victory of Secular forces. JAI HIND.

This is purely political. Both sides need to condemn the bad behavior. That's the only way to peace.

Mangalore is going the Gujarat way. The influx of Gujaratis as businessmen in Mangalore is responsible for the communal tensions. Before Mangalore used to be quite a peaceful place. BJP's triumph in Gujarat state election after the communal riots is what they are hoping to create here in Mangalore. Its time that if we want Mangalore to remain peaceful we need to create an awareness of BJP's hidden agenda which is to rule the state after creating communal disturbance.

I appreciate Daijiworld for highlighitng this issue. It is visible for the whole DK people that this is politically motivated communal tension. It is pitty that poor people get arrested with this type incidents and noboday goes to help them. Rich people or the people with political hands come out from the jail within a day.

As we see now I think Sangh Parwar has got an Agenda to create communal tension to gain during the forthcoming election. Cow slaughter is just a reason. Dakisha Kannada was so beautiful place where people of all Religions were living as friends.

All festivals were celebrated together without any hatred. Our District is very famous for Education, Health and all other infrastructures. We are hearing that it is going to be Special Economic Zone and there are lot of projects going to come up.

Hence, it is important for all of us to maintain peace in this region. We should not fall into the hands of Politics and should not listen to rumours. People of All religions should join their hands to maintain peace, harmony and security.

My partner in Mangalore informed me that last week two persons came by bike in the early night and threw stones to his shop located in the heart of the city. They escaped immediatly. No damage was done to the shop. Surprisingly the news came immediatly in the local TV.

He appreciated without being given complaint, the police rushed to his shop and enquired. He mentioned to me that a small group in Mangalore are trying to create communal tensions in Mangalore but we will not let them to succeed.I wish entire District now unite and defeat this local terrorists intentions.
