Moodbidri, Jan 6: As part of the concluding event of Alva's annual cultural extravaganza ‘Virasat-2008’ a musical evening was held at Shobhavana here on Sunday January 7.

Renowned playback singers from all over the state entertained and completely mesmerized the knowledgeable and appreciative audience.  A soothing and melodious evening it turned out to be indeed — this fifth and final day of Alva’s Virasat-2008. It was a day dedicated to the popular film music of the country, after four days of pure classical music, dance and folk arts from different parts of the country that had adhered to tradition. This Sunday event turned out to be a veritable treat for the popular film music buffs.

Well-known playback singers like Ajay Warrier, Rajesh Krishnan, L N Shastri, Archana Udupa, Ramesh Chandra, Surekha, Suneeta, Anuradha Bhat, Preetha, M D Pallavi, Kalavati and Mukesh belted out popular film numbers, both new and old from Kannada as well as Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi, enthralling the majestic audience. The appreciative audience soaked in each and every song, inadvertently moving to the beats, humming and crooning along.

Some of the popular Kannada melodies like ‘Kariya I love you,’ ‘Kunidu kunidu bare,’ Anisuthide,’ ‘Kathal rojave’ and ‘Kanne kalaimane’ from Tamil, ‘Kolakkuzhal vili’ and ‘Ente nenjile’ from Malayalam appealed so much to their musical sense that many were seen swaying and singing along. A band named Sangama from Bangalore played the background score with great élan and spirit.

The second half of the programme was dedicated to the famous group of Chou dancers from northern part of India, which in effect totally complemented the pure melody of the early part of the evening. There were in all a group comprising a total of 30 artistes performing under the auspices of Sangeeta Nataka Academy, New Delhi.

Thus ended another annual event which had for five days presented Indian tradition and culture in its pure form. The most admirable thing about this event has been the quality and precision maintained with regard to organizing an event of this magnitude.

The event has become a favourite destination and a must-see not only for the culture and art connoisseurs of the country but even those abroad. This was evident from the fact that several foreigners were spotted all over the place to watch this event. Undoubtedly, this cultural extravaganza is one which will be looked forward to eagerly next year and for years to come by all cultural and art enthusiasts.
