Udupi, Nov 6: Organs harvested from two brain-dead patients of Kasturba Hospital Manipal have kindled hope of getting new lease of life for six who will benefit from organs donation, and four others, who will get their eyesights back through the four corneas harvested from these patients on a single day. While kidneys are being used in Manipal and Mangaluru, other organs were airlifted to Bengaluru on Saturday November 5 by creating zero traffic corridor to Mangaluru airport.
The brains of Valerian D'Souza (56) from Kunjibettu here and Kishore (45), a resident of Brahmavar, had stopped functioning, and their relatives had given their nod for organ donation. After suffering serious injury in an accident which occurred at Perampalli here on November 3, D'Souza had been admitted into Manipal hospital. On the next afternoon, the doctors declared him brain dead. After obtaining consent of his wife, two corneas, two kidneys, and a liver were harvested by the doctors. His kidneys were used for patients admitted in Manipal Kasturba Hospital and Mangaluru A J Hospital.The liver was sent to Apollo Hospital Bengaluru.
Kishore, who fell down and injured himself, had been admitted into KMC Hospital on November 3. After the doctors declared him brain dead the next day, Kishore's brothers and sisters consented for his organ donation. Two corneas, two kidneys, and a liver were harvested. The kidney was used for a patient in Manipal Kasturba Hospital, while another kidney was used for a patient admitted into KMC Hospital Ambedkar Circle Mangaluru. The liver was dispatched to BGS Hospital Bengaluru.
The corneas so harvested have been kept in the eye bank of Manipal Hospital for future use.
Dr Padmaraj Hegde, Dr B M Zeeshan and Dr Arun Chawla of urology department of KMC Hospital Manipal, Dr Anita Shenoy, head of the department of anesthesia, and Dr Mahesh Gopashetty of Apollo Hospital Bengaluru performed surgeries to harvest the organs, said Kasturba Hospital Manipal medical superintendent and chief operating officer, Dr Col M Dayanand.
