Mangalore: Venue Set for ‘Netravati - Phalguni’ Kambla at Pilikula

Mangalore, Jan 8: Pilikula, located in Mudushedde at Vamanjoor, at the outskirts of city, has all set to organize the ‘Kambla,’ (buffalo race, the heroic sport of Tulunadu) which would be held on Wednesday, January 9. The Kambla will be held in the prominent muddy field which lies in front of ‘Guttu House,’ as it’s customary to be held throughout the coastal district, in the past.
J R Lobo, executive director of Pilikula Nisargadhama Society, Dr Jeevandhar Ballal, president of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Kambla Committee and others paid visit to the Kambla venue and observed the last minute preparations on Tuesday, January 8.
Speaking to media persons, J R Lobo said that the Kambla christened as ‘Netravati - Phalguni’ is being held here for the first time. The Kambla depicts the traditional culture of ‘Tulunadu’. This event also aimed at developing tourism in this area and introducing the local culture to the tourists at large, he explained.
More than 70 pairs of buffalos were expected to participate along with the handlers, during this Kambla. Further, developments will be done in the coming years, based on this year’s results, he added.
Dr Jeevandhar Ballal, said that steps have been taken by the committee to bring decency in Kambala, since this Kambla is named after two important rivers of the district; Netravati and Phalguni, he said.
The ‘Netravati-Phalguni’ Kambla will be inaugurated at 8 .00 a m on Wednesday, January 9 which would be expected to conclude at about 8.00 p m on Wednesday, January 9.
Kambla committee heads, Rajavarma Ballal, Jayaprakash Bhandary, Dr Vaman Nandavar and others were present on this occasion.
