Mangaluru, Nov 11: The state government has issued official notification in the state gazette on Thursday November 10, as per which the post of the next mayor of the city has been earmarked for woman candidate from general category, and that of the deputy, to candidate from scheduled caste category.
The mayoral election is still four months away. Current incumbent, M Harinath's term will end on March 12, 2017. Still, as soon as the reservation criteria came to be known, there has been a flurry of activity among Congress corporators from the city. Although all the women Congress corporators from here are eligible for becoming the next mayor, names of standing committee chairpersons, Appi and Kavita Sanil, are mainly being heard. It is gathered that former deputy mayor, Kavita Vasu, Sabita Misquith, and Pratibha Kulai are also in the race.
As assembly and other elections are slated shortly, the general opinion among Congress circles is that an experienced corporator may be favoured for the post of the city mayor by senior leaders.
The reservation criteria fixed for other city corporations in the state for mayor, deputy mayor, are given below in that order:
1. Ballari: general, woman (general category)
2. Belagavi: woman (woman BC A category), general.
3. Bengaluru: woman (general category), general.
4. Davanagere: woman BCB category, general.
5: Hubballi-Dharwad: BCA, woman (SC category).
6. Kalaburagi: general, woman (general category).
7. Mysuru: general, woman (general category).
8. Shivamogga: SC, woman (ST category).
9. Tumakuru: ST, woman (BCA category).
10. Vijaypaura: woman (SC), BCA.
