Kundapur: Man who fed poison to family remanded to judicial custody

Kundapur, Nov 11: Shankaranarayana Hebbar from Byndoor Ganganadu in the taluk, who is said to have fed poison to his wife and two children, causing the death of the children in the bargain, stands remanded to judicial custody. It is learnt that Hebbar did this, after having fallen in love with another lady.

Hebbar has been working as a cook since long. On the night of October 17, he had made his wife, Mahalaxmi Hebbar, and children, Ashwin Kumar Hebbar and Aishwaryalaxmi Hebbar, to consume poison. After his wife and children fell seriously fell they were admitted into Manipal hospital with help from local.

Both the children, who were students of the government PU college in Byndoor, had died on the spot.

It is gathered that Hebbar had fallen in love with a local lady, and because of this, had deserted his family about six months back. He returned on October 15 to his home, and his proposal to admit his paramour as a member of the family had faced stiff resistance from his wife and children. Therefore, prima facie, it was established that he fed poison to his wife and children and acted like having consumed poison himself. It is said that he had consumed only a small quantity of poison.

In a death note running to 16 pages, Hebbar said that the girl he had fallen in love had married someone else and therefore he had decided to end his life, as a result of which his family members also decided to follow suit. However, policemen during their investigation found out that the love affair of Hebbar had robbed his children of their lives. Hebbar's wife, who is recovering in the hospital, too confessed that Hebbar attacked her and forced her to consume poison. He also told her that he would be consuming poison thereafter, it is learnt.

Hebbar, who was also treated at the hospital, was taken into custody and brought to Byndoor for inquest. On Thursday, he was subjected to medical tests at the government hospital here. A case has been registered against him in Byndoor police station.
