Mangaluru, Nov 14: Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) held protest opposite Konaje police station on Sunday November 13, alleging that innocent people have been taken into custody relating to murder attempt at Munnur village and stabbing of two persons at Manjanady.
During the protest, the protesters engaged in heated exchange of words with the police. Prohibitory orders continue to be in force within Ullal and Konaje police station limits.
Manjanady residents, Sameer, Nawaz and Rammohan, are recovering from stab injuries in hospital. Several people have been rounded up by police personnel for questioning about these attacks. Relating to the stabbing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader, Rammohan, some people from Amblamogaru and other villages have been taken into custody. Protesters at Konaje numbering around 400, claimed that police had barged into houses in the early hours and taken innocent youth into custody and that they were being tortured. The protesters also claimed that police had broken doors and entered into houses, as a result of which women and old people were shocked.
After arguments broke out between police personnel and protesters, personnel of Karnataka State Reserve Police and additional police personnel who had come from Karwar resorted to light lathi charge. Assistant commissioner of police, Shruti, addressing the protesters, said that holding protests and bringing people together when prohibitory orders are in place were not right. She said that some people have been taken into custody for investigation and asked everyone to cooperate. As the protesters did not relent, they were dispersed through light caning.
Police commissioner, Chandra Sekhar, and senior police officers have visited the spot.
