Udupi: Janajagrithi Samiti Registers Fresh Complains Against Nagarjua, Suzlon

Daijiworld Media Network

Udupi, Jan 12: The Janajagrithi Samiti (Nandikur) headed by Executive President Balakrishna Shetty, President Laxman Shetty and Horata Samiti President Vijay Hegde, met the State governor Rameshwar Takoor and discussed with him problems faced by  villagers in and around Nandikur near Padubidri, owing to Nagarjuna and Suzlon projects.

The Samiti stated that the Nandikur-Kukkikatte road , which was developed under the PMGSY scheme, is to be blocked with  gates that will favour the Nagarjuna project. This is a total violation of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act and complete disrespect to the directions of Supreme Court, it stated.

The Samiti also complained that the Nagarjuna contractors are hiring anti-social elements to manhandle and threaten the residents of Yellur, Santur, Nandikur and Thenka and forcing them to surrender their lands.

The Samiti also accused Suzlon of deviating  from the original plan of wind energy plant manufacturing unit, and expanding it  SEZ. The Samiti did not oppose Suzlon as it has  less environmental implications and is more  labour oriented. But the Samiti pointed out that as against the actual requirement of about 120 acres for the plant, the company is being given over 1000 acres including the forest land for creating SEZ.

'Nandikuru Mugila Devera Kadu' has highly religious importance and periodic poojas known as 'Katte Pooje' take place in the forest of 'Mahisha Mardini Durga Parameshwari, and it is religiously protected by the Panchayat. However, the revenue department has transferred the forest to KIADB, which in turn is in the process of handing it over to Suzlon SEZ, the  Samiti added.

The Samiti also accused the former Prime Minister Deve Gowda and his two sons Kumaraswami and Revanna  for providing protection to the project at the cost of the lives and livelihoods of the poor local population.

As we all aware that the lot of funds have been spent by the company on this project so far. It would have been better if they were not allowed to start the work at all. Today after commencing the work, we are realising the effects, problems.

Now they have the supreme court verdict with them and they will build the plant at any cost. I beleive these protests, complaints are not going to benifit anyone. No political party will come forward to support to the troubled people. They will sell DK dist to big companies. Everyones hands have been tied with money. This should be lesson to all of us.

It is welcome that people who are far off are having concern for their naitve district like Mr. Shetty. That is the real spirit .Some people seem to believe that the beedi workers and the poor are for sale and that they can be purchased for few rupees to participate in the agitations ! Then what about the companies themselves who have purchased entire administration and some NGOs and operate in a clandestine manner defying all laws and values.

What about the entire fishermen community who are participating in the agitations - are they purchased or is it their fear of loosing their livelihood for ever that makes them alert? The projects are capable of generating employments but to how many persons ? Can they employ the thousands who are removed out of their traditional habitat ? Certainly not.

Should the society forego its daily bread for peanuts? Should the food be replaced by Industrial poisionous effluents? Mr. Shetty - you people are doing the right thing and you should remain undaunted by criticisms- for the sake of a healthy sociey.

Sitting in Dubai you can't lecture us on what is good or bad for this region ? It is sure that the anti-Nagarjuna elements are triggered by vested interests. I have personally seen that the protestors are mostly beedi workers & jobless local youths hired for few rupees for their role. We are blaming MRPL, Konkan Railways, MCF for not giving jobs to locals. How can these companies give jobs to local youths who are trying to black list their potential employer. Are we not digging our own pit ?

Mr. Louis, Question is whether you want to live in dictatorial China or democratic India. The immediate victims of the project already realize the difficulties ahead. I am one of the affected, I know the pain. Like they say 'Prasava vedane thaige matra gottu'.

The lands are snatched from the helpless and given to rich who do not need any help. These projects & SEZs are a process of creating new Kings and Queens in the country after having got rid of them once.

Did you bother to find out why businessmen cannot buy the lands of their own, why should be government lands be given free or sometimes @ Re.1/- per acre to them and the private lands at a price decided by the buyer and not by the landowner????

Mr. Balakrishna Shetty. You know why China has progressed? It is because they do not have any samithis like we have in India to oppose any potential projects. Most of the time our jobless people busy with petty cheap issues...otherwise with so many good people, India could have been a superpower long ago.

This Devegowda's Government made an total Disaster to our Coastal Belt.Regarding The AntiSocial Elements the Villagers have to Pluck thier activities. If any locals involved in helping them, the villagers must inform the law and order authorities, and not let the law take in their hands.

It is very difficult to stay in the Area, and we urge all near by villagers to join the protest March along with JanaJagrithi,Now you may all assume that your village is safe, but in future these projects will aquire the whole land of this coastal Belt. So Please Act Now.Our Good Old Politicians are well off and they are paid not to speak against the projects.
