Mangalore, Jan 13 (Sunday, 4-10 pm): A two-day seminar on the contribution of periodicals to the development of literature, organized under the joint auspices of Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi and Raknno Konkani weekly of Mangalore, in the Bishop's House hall here concluded on the afternoon of Sunday, January 13, on a fruitful and successful note.

On Saturday, January 12 morning, session was inaugurated by renowned Kannada-Konkani journalist and former editor of Taranga Kannada weekly Santosh Kumar Gulvady. Several Konkani experts, scholars and writers from Mumbai, Goa, Kerala and Mangalore presented well-prepared papers on various aspects of periodicals and their contribution to literature.
The keynote address was delivered by Sandesh Prabhudesai, editor of Sunaparant Konkani daily of Goa. The salient points he dwelt upon were that literature existed in different forms much before scripts came into vogue. While today's periodicals have spread widely into the fields of folklore to electronic media. He gave a clarion call to the entire Konkani-speaking community, well-placed Konkani-speaking entrepreneurs at Infosys, Kingfisher group, the Pai family of Manipal and others to help set up an independent and exclusive Konkani TV satellite channel. This could facilitate the entire Konkani-speaking populace to transcend the constraints and barriers of scripts.

A session on the problems and challenges as experienced in managing periodicals was chaired by Dileep Borkar, editor of 'Bimb' Konkani monthly of Goa. Papers were presented by former Raknno editor Fr Mark Walder, Kamini Kini and Fr Ubaldo Fernandes, editor of Goa's 'Vavraddeancho Ixtt'.
The second session on Saturday on periodicals as the sole patron of poetry, essays and topical / serious writings was chaired by senior Konkani author J B Moraes. Papers were presented by Udayavani Kannada daily's senior sub-editor P Satish Mallya, Kamalakar Mhalshi of Goa Konkani Academy and Madhavi Sardesai of Goa University.

The first session on Sunday on serialization of novels in peridicals was chaired by former history lecturer and journalist S M Krishna Rao, where papers were read by Akademi award winner Devidas Kadam and Bhiku Bomi Naik.
The fourth and final session as to how periodicals can nourish short stories was chaired by novelist-columnist Edwin J F D'Souza, where Mahabaleshwar Sail, novelist and story-writer from Majali, Uttar Kannada, Alleppey Kerala's retired Physics lecturer and story-writer K R Vasanthamony and story-writer Sheela Kolambkar presented their papers.
Damodar Mauzo and Dr Khurshid Alam representing Sahitya Akademi gave their valuable comments and guidelines. On the same occasion, cash prizes and awards of Raknno literary competitions - 2007 were also presented to the winners.
Mangalore diocese's vicar general Monsignor Denis Moras Prabhu was the chief guest at the concluding ceremony. In his message, he lauded the enthusiasm and commitment of the participants who dedicated their time on both days towards the progress and development of Konkani. Editor of 'Zoit', Devidas Kadam, and Damodar Mauzo were also on the dais.
Raknno editor Fr Francis Rodrigues thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the seminar and also assured the Sahitya Akademi of Raknno's full cooperation to events of this kind.
Other editorial and office staff of Raknno led by Percy Noronha, Joachim Pinto, Tony Ferros, Pachu Ferar, Daphne Lewis and others deserve full praise in organizing and faciliating the smooth conduct of the event.
